Are you weighing them? Are they pooping okay? It depends on what kind of food and how many kcals in each. Their tummies will definitely stick out after but shouldn't be rock hard.

You can mix extra water with the canned food to make sure they're staying hydrated.

Have they been dewormed? At their age, that is definitely something I'd be doing if it hasn't been done already.

^ and this.

Thanks ya'll. I don't have a scale to weigh them. I could look in and see who was pooping when they were in the laundry room. But we had to move them to my bathroom since Penny learned to jump over the babygate. There is always lots of poop in their box but I haven't witnessed any from Resa, the one with the bigger belly. Tonight I put some kibble in a saucer of water and they drank it, I guess because it smelled/tasted like meat.
When they start eating kibble, do I stop the milk replacer and wet food?
The rescue's vet won't worm them until they're 6 weeks old.
Their wet food is 9 lives, all different flavors and their milk replacer is Hartz.

I prefer wet food for cats in general and especially kittens. I have one cat who prefers kibble and one who prefers wet food. As it is I only give them kibble now because they are growing babies and I like letting them have free access to it, when they are done growing I plan on weaning them to solely wet food.

I'd love give them free access but they gobble everything up, I'm terrified they'll eat until they hurt themselves!

Oh I didn't mean it as a free access thing, but you had asked about cutting out wet food. I wouldn't personally. :) Many cats will not drink enough water on their own, and feeding wet food is a great way to make sure they are getting enough in.

Is a 5.5 ounce can per day between them enough (plus milk 4 x a day). On another forum someone said split a can between them 3 x a day, but that seems like a lot. When do I stop the milk?

How old are they now? My boys get split a 13.5 oz can a day between them, but they are also older and considerably bigger. They eat wet food twice a day and did get three times a day when they were younger.

They are 4 and 5 weeks old. I split their can up into 4 or 5 small meals with milk in between times.

This is a really good site that helps explain what to expect at different kitten ages. http://www.forgottenfelines.com/v4/foster/botbabies.shtml

My fosters are around 3 weeks now (going by 1lb per 1month) and they've now cut their teeth, and I'm now offering them Royal Canin Babycat 34. It's specifically made for kittens 0-4 months that are no longer with their Mum, and its teeennny tiny for their little months. I offer that and a small saucer of formula while I'm feeding the other kits.

Just for future reference....I don't recommend the Hartz milk replacer. I've been told by numerous people (vets and a breeder) that it has been known to cause some gastrointestinal issues in the wee ones. Best bet for a readily available formula is the KMR.

Also, an awesome dry food for weaning kittens is the Babycat food by Royal Canin. Tiny wee baby kibbles for tiny wee baby kittens! And I agree that you don't have to cut out the moist food.

Thanks Merico, my babies both have Uri so we bought 9 lives because the shelter recommended the smellier the better they'd eat. Penny wouldn't eat or drink for a while I had to force feed her the milk. Will definitely check out that site, I've been googling like crazy but haven't seen that one yet.

Thanks Blackrose, when we finish off this bottle I'll check in to KMR.

If you'll be stopping the formula soon, I honestly wouldn't bother switching it. I accidentally (didn't know at the time) switched the brand of my kittens formulas and they got nasty diarrhea because of it. But if you do switch, do it gradually so to avoid tummy issues.

Also with the wet food, kittens that age should only really be getting pate, in chicken flavor only. There are a few other flavors they can have as well, but I'll have to get back to you on which ones.

Thanks Merico, right now ours are eating all kinds of flavors.
Noted about no formula switching also, will remember KMR for next time, if we do this again.

Re: the canned food... I was told all canned food is fine, but the fish based stuff makes kitten stink! Hahaha. I just picked some up for my fosters today (all poultry based) and they loved the stuff. Between that and their kibble they didn't each much of tonight's formula, maybe 5cc each if that.
