Hi! My 6month old pug is scheduled to be neutered this saturday and my nerves are killing me.....I guess I'm acting like a paranoid mother again! I just cant imagine the thought of my baby going through the operation table and knives....plus the slim chance that something might happen. Here in the Philippines, it's not very common for dogs to be fixed here, given the numerous stray dogs in the city. So this is really an issue I'm going through alone since alot of my family members dont really believe in the importance of neutering.

I have a few (ok...alot) of concerns which I hope anyone could help me out with. Once neutered......
1. will the personality of my dog change drastically? My pug is such a clown and can get quite agitated by the smallest thing....but in a funny way. Will all that craziness of his just disappear or will he remain to be the clown and happy dog that he is?
2. will his doggy smell lessen a bit? I read somewhere that fixed dogs dont smell as strong as un-fixed dogs, how true is this?
3. will he still be able to perform sexually if there is a female in heat nearby? just curious
3. wat changes should i expect right after surgery?
4. will his habit of play humping my other male pup or marking territory stop or atleast decrease. he just started lifting his leg to urinate in corners of my flat around 2-3days ago so the habit hasnt sunk in that much yet but the play humping has been there for nearing 2months now.
5. just for my peace of mind.....how safe is the surgery? my vet has assured me that i can pick up boozer same day as operation but is it really an easy and safe operation?

Hope you guys dont mind my endless questions. I'm a over paranoid mother....I totally admit that. thanks!

Yep, it's a really safe and easy operation.

No, his personality won't change drastically. He'll still be your happy-go-lucky clown - at least until he's an older dog, and even then he'll probably still be a wild and crazy guy.

The doggy smell from the oil glands in his skin won't be affected, but the musky "male" smell of a mature dog will diminish.

The humping will hopefully diminish, but that's a dominance behaviour more than a sexual behaviour, so it may not stop altogether.

The urination is marking his territory. The only way that will completely stop is with training, but the neutering should make this easier.

He shouldn't show any appreciable interest in a female in heat. That's the reason neutering helps to keep male dogs from roaming.

Immediately after surgery he will probably be a bit sore, and he may be somewhat slower than usual for a few days, perhaps even a tad cranky, but that's from the anesthesia and it will wear off. Do be careful about feeding him too much or letting him drink too much after you bring him home. Small quantities for at least the first 24 hours after he comes home are best, since he may have some nausea.

Just pet him and baby him when he gets home, try to keep him from jumping up on things for a few days, and try to keep him calm. Sometimes that's impossible, I know. And try to stay calm yourself. If he senses you're worried or fearful when you take him in to the vet it will upset him.

bounces!!

when Renee said to try and keep them still... it made me laugh because my vet told my mom the same thing after my pup was spayed and, well yea it was difficult. my friends had been sleeping out and we were sleeping in our sleeping bags in a row when my mom brought my dog back home. she's a golden so she LOVES everybody and gets estatic around new people. anyways so she runs up the stairs and does bounces (sorry, horse term... it's when they're jumping a series of fences with no stride in between, front legs come down and are taking off again right after the hind legs touch) over at least 5 girls. it was so funny. but yea it was difficult to keep her still!!

anyways i know when i say don't worry it's not going to help you not worry, but i'm sure your pup will be just fine! :D good luck!

I had my dachshund neutered when he 6-8 months old and I haven't had any problems with him. He is now almost 7 years and is a healthy, happy dog.

I had my pup neutered about four weeks ago...his personality didn't change at all. He was a little tired the next day, but never got very sore. He was absolutely himself two days after surgery. People, including the vet, said that it would be rougher on us than on him. I think they were right. Wishing you luck

Hello,

The worst thing I found about having my male neutered was him not being at home over night. He did wonderfully, a little tired the next day, but absolutely fine. However, a little joke my husband and I made up is the first time we took Dexter back to the vet after his snips job he went storming right to the back of the vet's office, kind of like, "ok the last time I was here I had something and now it is gone, give it back."

Dexter was 6 months old when he was neutered, he is now 1.5 years old and healthy and happy and no change in personality whatsoever. He is still a loving and lots of energy bichon! Gidget other bichon, was spayed at 6 months and she never had a change in personality either! She is now 4.

I will be thinking of you and the little guy on saturday, keep us all posted on him. And thank you for being such a good mom, being nervous like that is a good sign. I would worry if you were not a little upset!

Beth :)

Hi Ajax

It went fine, as a matter of fact my hardest thing was to try and keep him from playing too rough or any form of jumping for a few days, YEAH RIGHT!!! (I am not yelling at you with this just making it known that I was being sarcastic a bit.) Dexter was the most active little boy afterwards I know. He still is quite active with playing, running and jumping. I do not think he knew anything had happened. He is doing really well, at 1.5 years of age.

Gidget is 4 years old and was spayed at 6 months and she was/is the same little spunky girl we always knew/know her as too!

I know the feeling of being nervous and scared, I have been there. But I have to brag our vet and office is super fantastic, called us the next day to see how the pups were, and sent a card to say hope you heal well. I will admit I was one of the people annoying the vet's office all day calling and checking up on my pups. But the office said that is the type of people they wish more animal owners would be like sometimes.

Glad to hear things went well. We had our Great Dane neutered a couple months ago. He was exhausted & barely made it to his bed to pass out when we arrived back home! My husband laid with him on his pillow & fell asleep. I believe I have that picture in the Gallery. If not, I'll upload it soon. Have a great week......... :)

Hi Ruth27...how did your puppy do with the whole neutering experience? Is the little guy more spry than before? I was just wondering...sorry it took me so long to ask this though.

I've been reading this with great interest. I'm calling today to make an appointment for my Hammie to be neutered, and I've been fretting that he would be different. I just didn't want to think of him changed. And, I love that he is so protective. He steps out in front of Addie and I when someone is coming.....I always think it's kinda funny, like he's saying 'I'll handle this, girls'. BUT......I have the worse fear that he will run off in search of a female and be hit by a car or end up lost. Also wouldn't want him responsible for someone's unwanted puppies. I have just been so afraid it would somehow change his 'spirit'.....or the wonderful distinct 'maleness' of him.....if that makes any sense at all??? I feel better after reading the posts. :)

Hi Debi

Little Hammie will do wonderfully. I have Dexter who still does the brave "I'll handle this" a lot even after being neutered~! It is wonderful to see he has nothing changed, actually he seems happier not to have that bumping his legs and all when he runs and things. Although, humor here, everytime he goes to the vet he loves to say hello to the girls first and get loved up, and then he starts toward the back of the bldg as if to say once i came in here with something and it is gone did you find them? Even though he was too young to really remember that at all.

Keep me posted on Hammie, I know he will be fine!

Debi, the surgery is fairly simple. (I've watched it done at the vet's office countless times) He will be missing two "Parts" after the sugery is over. ;) The recovery time is not nearly that of what a Spay would be, and he should be back to his old self within a few days.

As for the temperament changing... Um, I'd say it depends on the dog. If you have a dog that 'thinks with his testosterone', then YES neutering will change his personality. He'll be more focused on YOU, and not on sniffing for females in heat. He won't be as distant and he'll possibly gain weight if he's not super-active.

Good luck!

Its great that you're getting your dog fixed. Its very unfortunate that people don't really care about fixing their pets in your country since it aids in the overpopulation of unwanted, neglected, and abused pets that end up on the streets and simply in the wrong hands...but anyways..I'm glad that you made this important decision and I'm sure your dog will be absolutely fine. Both of my dogs are fixed and I never have to worry about any spotting from my female pit bull or agitation from my chihuahua...

Support neutering and spaying everyone ... :D

Hello Debi,

Dexter was castrated. His sac was emptied and it shrivled up. All other parts are there. Trust me every once in a while they do the "dance" on your leg and things, they still think and believe they can just nothing comes of it. I know it sounds disgusting but it also prevents cancer there!

My pit pup was neutered recently, too. She's almost 9wks now.. (this friday) and its VERY hard to keep her from running and playing. I just love seeing her happy and she HATES the cone we have to put on her and the cage. =( It's for her own good. I want the incision to heal right.
