I'm definitely the last person I'd think of that would be scared of flying. I usually love it!
But I'm flying on Monday and I am really really scared. I don't know why. I'm not scared for a terrorist thing or hijacking, I am just terrified of the plane crashing. I know that you have more of a chance to get into a car accident than a plane crash, but still.
The fact that it's late at night and over water, doesn't help AT ALL.
I've flown both at night and over water before, but this flight just makes me really nervous.
For those of you who hate/get scared of flying, if you HAVE to get on a plane, how do you go about it?

I'm not usually afraid of fly at all. I am a frequent flyer and have expirences a couple of things that were not ment to happen on an airplane. BUT there are flights that Im extremly afraid of. Im not sure why, but it just happens. What usually helps me is valerian tee or pills. Helps you calm down quite a bit!

I was given a word search book to do by another passenger and that helped keep my mind busy.

I love flying! But I understand the fear about a plane crashing - I think to an extent that's sort of normal. But if it's causing you heavy anxiety, that's a problem.
Can you talk to a doctor about getting some sedatives before getting on the plane? If it's at night you might be able to take something like a Tylenol PM or whatever too, and that could help. It won't help so much with the anxiety but it will eventually get you really sleepy and you will probably fall asleep on the flight.

I always bring a laptop and a couple of movies, or a good book!

It also helps to stay up really late the night before. that way you can just sleep on the plane, bring a pillow!

I adore flying. but my cousin gets a bit nervous. for her the secret is eye mask for sleeping, ipod, pillow and a tylenol PM.

i'm usually against pills, but for a plane ride every once in awhile, whatevs. Take some benadryl or tylenol PM to knock you out.

Can you drink? My ex used to take a shot or 2 before he flew...

Or you can always ask a doc to prescribe you a xanax or something

Good luck...you'll be just fine :)

I don't like flying, so I always treat myself to a book or a magazine from the bookstore in the airport. Magazines are the best because there's such a variety of stories you can usually find one to keep your interest for a while. Even better if you can find one with a sudoku or word search in it. I also always buy a bag of candy or something to munch on that I wouldn't usually buy.

Of course if you're flying at night it's difficult to read.... I always feel bad having the light on if the guy next to me is trying to sleep. I like the laptop/DVDs idea. But knowing my luck my battery would probably die.

yeah if we are talking real anxiety...

I fret a week before the flight and the whole vacation and then even a few weeks after I have nightmares.

I drink an alcoholic beverage before flying just to calm my nerves. It helps take the edge off for me but it doesn't solve the issue before flying and after and I'm still scared during the flight just numbed down lol.

since you are too young to drink. I'd talk to a doctor about some anxiety meds. that's waht I need to do. except we bought a van so we don't HAVE to fly to visit family anymore lol. YEP we'd rather drive 15+ hours rather than fly because I'm such a wreck haha. no book or magazine or game or movie is going to distract me.

I'm not one to be scared about flying. Planes really are built to withstand forces far, far greater than anything you could experience in the worst turbulence. If you see the wing flex during flight, just remember that it is made to do that and it flexing is much better than it breaking. Just check out this pic from the testing of Boeing's new 787 to see how well these things are designed:

Yes, those white curvy bits are the planes wings being flexed.

Oh, and if you hit turbalnces, chances are that every plane that flies your route, will have them. So don't worry, the plane isnt going crazy - its just the wind or what ever is going on out there. The last time I flew there were so many bad and long spells of turbulances (3 hours  of none stop) that many got sick. IF that happens (This has only happened to me once or twice ever) then just breath deep and try to stay calm. You'll be fine :)
