My puppy is home

We finally got to bring Leo home. We got him and Saturday and he is awesome. Actually, he is a puppy so we have taken to calling him "Monster". He is 8 weeks old (9 tomorrow!) and is pretty much potty trained. They say that Chows are the easiest to train and I guess they were right! We haven't done anything. Anyway, here are some pictuers!

Thanks! I really like him! He is so soft!! Everyone keeps asking me if he is Brindle. I am sure he will be red when he grows up, but it would be nice if he stayed. I could probably make a fortune showing him!! lol

He's adorable. And yes, puppies can be deceiving. Watch him for the next week or so with the potty training. This time is what I call the 'honeymoon' stage.

Brindles

Beautiful! I have never seen a brindle Chow before!

Brindle color is found in Chows with pure pet bloodlines. The color is a disqualification and does not denote good breeding. They tend to be hyper. Sarah had one as a rescue, and gave it away. That was the only one she has ever seen in 35+ years.

They don't seem to have any more skin or coat problems then any other color. But at least this pup will have a super good home and be a much loved pet!!! And give much love in return.

Sarah is saying that a male pet Chow needs to be neutered to keep them as a pet. And also that what the dog learns and does up to age six months is what he will be for the rest of his life. You cannot show him, and you should definitely not breed him. His color is a disqualification. And he will not turn red. If you bought him for anything else other than a novelty pet, there is nothing but to love him, and spoil him..........and get him neutered.

Um... if you were interested in the bloodline to continue the discussion about poor breeding, I could go in depth with you as both mom & dad are my sister's dogs and I have the full pedigree and they are stellar.

His parents are both purebred and neither have brindle colored puppies in their line. Maybe he is a fluke, but I doubt it. His "uncle" is a deep red and I believe Leo will take after him. He is very layed back and well behaved (for a puppy!) and is loved to pieces.

I catn wait to see how he looks as he ages. Gracie's back has more red in it now. She's still very pretty but seems she has darkened some by her soon to be 6 months.

Well, sometimes "breeders" will rip innocent people off, telling them about "rare" colors, etc. Like with the white Dobermans, etc. Not knowing how well versed on Chows you might be, it is hard to politely ask someone if they know they are getting sold a dog that has a big disqualification and one that should not be used for breeding or showing.

I was on the phone with Sarah, and what I typed was what she was quoting to me. I had never heard of a brindle Chow, and thought you might have been sold a mutt. So you can blame her, roflmbo!!

Um... if you were interested in the bloodline to continue the discussion about poor breeding, I could go in depth with you as both mom & dad are my sister's dogs and I have the full pedigree and they are stellar.

The pedigree can't be very stellar, or the lines would not carry brindle. My friend Sarah had one of the top Chow kennels in the country. As I have said, if you can get your hands on the Anna K. book of Chows you can read about Sarah and her dogs, and see pictures of her dogs.

She would love to see the pedigree. I personally only know the old time great Chows from like 30 years ago.....and even that very vaguely. Like Spy Of Poppyland is one I can remember. I wish Sarah knew a bit more about computers, and could maybe scan some pictures of her dogs.

Also.....did your sister have the hips on her dogs xrayed? Chows have started having more problems with bad hips over the years, and it helps to know the condition of the parents hips to determine if there is a chance the "Kiddies" might develop problems. Penn Hip is supposed to be able to be used on young puppies to test hip laxity. Especially in a straight stifled breed such as the Chow.

If you can find someway of getting the pedigree online, Sarah would be tickled to see it. They have a form at sitstay.com that will produce a pedigree......and it's free. Them is the bestest kind!!!!!

Yes Manchester, the hips have been checked. I find your statements insulting about these dogs lineage. Would you look at a picture of my daughter and tell me that her hair was red so obviously she had poor breeding? Because that is basically what you are saying by insulting a person's new baby...

MANY red chows start brindle. Look it up on the internet.

I do believe the entire point of the thread was to share the joy of having a new puppy. I realize you are not trying to be combative, but you are coming across poorly and taken some of the joy of sharing.
