You dog is totally blind? Wow! It sounds like he's adjusted well. Thanks for the idea. I'm thinking though, that she may be too much of a fraidy cat for a wagon. I think she needs to be snugged into something. It's great that Mammoth has such a good time though. Wonderful.

B.B. It sounds like that dog was made to be very secure that way. I could do a sling but I bet I'd get too hot when the weather is hot. LOL. Those Chihuahuas can really put out the heat.

Thanks everybody for your thoughtfulness. I know how you know how hard it is when our pets get old and start having problems which make us so sad for them. At least she's not too terribly bad off....just this darn vision thing mostly. Her heart murmur isn't causing her much difficulty yet, but the vet said that eventually it will get worse. But for now, we'll just give her the best life possible.

He sure is! When we adopted him four years ago he was suffering from untreated glaucoma. At eleven years old, he wasn't sturdy enough for any of the invasive surgeries that could have restored his vision, so we removed both of his eyes (to control his pain) and he adjusted fabulously.
I totally understand that she might be leery of a wagon: since Mammoth is just shy of a hundred pounds, a backpack wasn't really an option for us! =P
I know it's scary and hard to watch, but she *will* adjust to losing sight in that eye if she does eventually lose it completely. It might take a while (especially if she's a timid sort), but she can do it, especially with you here to help her along the way!

Sorry, I don't have any good photos of it, but Allie and I each have this front carrier that's meant for small dogs (Allie's is larger size than mine), that we use for the ferrets. It could very well be a good way to carry her around

PW...Buzz looks very content and ready to roll. lol. It looks like he's saying, "Let's get the show on the road." Cute!
Houlahoops, she has lost it completely in the left eye. I sometimes wonder if she'd be better off if she were totally blind because what's freaking her out, I think, is the loss of depth perception by vision in just one eye. She sees things as though they're going to smack her, even when the movement of the thing is several feet away. But inside, she can tear around. She spins when she's happy, just two or three spins and looks up at me just before she's going to twirl around again, as if to say, "watch what I can do." She grabs toys or dirty socks and shakes that prey, spins around, goes in for the kill again...really cute. She's quite happy and she doesn't seem to have any arthritis or anything like that. It's just outside where she has this trepidation. She even dislikes going out to pee when it's sunny. Those shadows freak her out. I do hope she'll get accustomed to or be able to compensate somehow. I notice that she does recover much more quickly than she use to. She is or has gotten more timid than she use to be. She's extremely sociable...loves people, so she's not timid of people...just scary things or fireworks...stuff like that.
Jess, That is so cool! Your ferrets look really cute in there. I would think something like that would make her feel really secure and might just be what we need. She weighs between 5 and 6 Lbs. It fluctuates. When she's 6 lbs, she's a tad on the fat side, which she is right now. I am cutting her back so she'll get closer to 5 lbs, which is really the perfect weight for her. I love Outward Hound stuff. Lyric use to have a back pack that he'd carry on some of our walks. I'd put my water bottle, a sandwich and my cigarettes in the pockets, along with treats and a collapsible, nylon water bowl for him, (if we weren't hiking where there was a creek) also from Outward Hound. Thanks for showing me those photos. It gives me an idea.
Barb, I will try something...I want to make sure she even likes going on outings that way. So, I might try a home made sling or something just to try her out first.
