My housetraining dilemma

My wife and I just got a 10 week old Bernese Mountain Dog pup the other day and we have a bit of a dilemma. We are crate training very sucessfully but the issue comes when we both work which happens a few days a week. The deal is I dont think it is good to leave the dog in the crate for 10hrs during the day till one of us gets home. We have no neighbors or family available to come over and let the puppy out. The option we do have is the kitchen with a baby gated entrance exit and linoleun floor. If she is in the kitchen she will void on the floor whereas she wont in the crate. I think ten hours in the crate she will void in it which I dont want. I guess what I am wondering is if this kitchen peeing is going to severly set back housebreaking and what approach you think is best for a dog we woudl liek to be eventually house broken. I should alos state that we live in an apartment so we cant leave the dog in a backyard or similar situation. thanx for any advice

I think 10 hours is too long to leave a baby pup alone, whether it's in a kitchen or crate. Sorry...I can't think of a thing except finding someone to help out in the middle of the day.

Every single accident in the house is going to be a setback to your housetraining efforts.

A puppy should not be crated longer than its age in months plus one hour without getting a chance to potty - for your pup that would be 3 hours.

My suggestion would be hiring a dog walker/pet sitter to come in at least twice a day and let the puppy out while you are working.

Are there any doggie daycares in your area? Or a friend or family member that could sit for you? I agree, 10 hrs. is a LONG time for a baby to stay alone.

10 hours is WAY to long for a pup to be in the house by its self!!! :yikes:

Is there a way you could drop him off at the vet for the day and let him play with other pups while having people to take him out and feed him??

I agree with what's been said.

There's not much you can do besides have someone spend time with your pup during that period. Puppies can't be left alone that long.

Also you are not going to be successful in house training if no one's there that long; a puppy can have a lot of accidents in 10 hours, even putting the fact that they need interaction in that time aside.

Our puppy is 5 months old and we still come home in the middle of the day to take him out and play with him. Dog's need social interaction!

The pup definitely doesn't need to be left alone for that long in a crate or unsupervised in any room. Hire a dog walker/pet sitter.
