    I'm really bummed out.

Our large saltwater tank is crashing because of it.

Two nights ago there was a really bad thunderstorm. We went around and unplugged the TVs and video game consoles in case of a power surge.

A few minutes afterwards, our house was struck by lightning and the only damage we could find at the time was that our cable box wouldn't turn on.

Yesterday afternoon I walk into the house to find it smelled like burning rubber. I couldn't find the source of the smell. A little bit later I saw a spark in the sump tank under the fish tank... Ian discovered that a pump had somehow split off from the wire so there was a live wire sending electric current through the tank. The skimmer also ended up over flowing, which sent concentrated waste back into the tank.

Right now the tank is crashing. We did a big water change last night and will do another tonight. Most of the coral is dead/dying... most of these were small pieces we bought in college that have grown up in our tank. It's so disappointing. The fish seem okay, and I hope that everything that's still alive will pull through.

    Ugh. It's so disheartening :(

Ugh, I know how you feel. Last year our house was struck and it was THE LOUDEST noise I've ever heard in my life. It scared me so much. I was watching TV and when the lightening struck, omg, no ways to even describe it. It was just so beyond loud. Our cable box also went out. But thankfully we have lightening rods on our house (we live up on a hill, and whoever built the house thought it'd be smart to have them, thank goodness). And I think it saved us from any more damage. We did have a huge smoke smell though, and my mom was freaking out, lol.

I'm sorry and best of luck putting everything back together. Is there some sea life specialist you could call, an aquarium place...that could give some kind of advice on saving the coral?

Aww I'm sorry :( Your tank was looking so good in the last pics I saw. I'm glad the fishes are still OK, hopefully they and at least a bit of your college coral make it.

The tank still looks terrible- most of the coral has died. The fish are all still alive (knock on a LOT of wood). I've been trying not to think about it, because it makes me so sad. One of the pieces (an Alien Eye Chalice) started out as a 1" frag... it was probably an 8" circle, and now it's completely dead.

I think a lot of people have tank crash stories... but this was just so random and unfair.

If it was gonna happen at all, I'm glad it happened when you were there, not while you were on vacation. Ian would have never forgiven me

Oh gosh! What a shame. I hope it won't take too much to get it back up and balanced out again. Glad nothing worse happened and that you stayed safe.
