My friend and her new man came over to my house Saturday night after we had gone out to eat and had a few drinks. Well, I will admit that Brady does jump some, and I have been working with him and he has gotten so much better. When company comes over I stay right by him and make him sit, though he will jump up on occasion. The guy likes dogs and all and his rommate has one so I didn't think we would have a problem. Well Brady jumped up and that guy hit him SO hard on the nose. I was like what the f*&$? Brady does not get hit by anyone, and I especially don't appreciate someone I barely know coming into my home and thinking he can discipline MY dog. I flew off the handle. I said "Don't you ever hit my dog again, you don't come into my home/his home and hit him." He said "Why, he was going to jump?" I told him because I don't personally believe in hitting an animal to teach it a lesson, I only believe in positive reinforcements. He said something along the lines of how dumb that was and I retorted that if he ever hit my dog again I would cut of his b@lls and place them on a stake in my front yard, and were we understood? A little harsh I will admit, but I was so mad I was practically seeing red. He seemed to be a bit disturbed by my statement. I wonder if it was my tone or my words that got him? ;)

I am sorry, but people just cannot come into my house and hit my dog. And this is the second time she has brought a boyfriend that tries to act all big and bad like he knows how to handle a dog, and both have just come off looking like complete idiots in that department. But, it is not her fault that she hasn't chosen a man that has any canine intellect.

So, after I told him about the whole positive reinforcement thing, the dimwit then fed my dog a whole Krystal! And he didn't even ask me if he could eat it, he just gave it to him! I would have consented, possibly to a little bite, but don't give my dog a whole Krystal! I said oh geesh, don't give him anything else! Ugh! I thought the guy was alright until this whole incident and now I am completely annoyed and disgusted by him. I am so thankful for my animal loving husband and that I am not out in the dating scene because if I was, I would be holed up in my house with my dog. There are some real idiots out there.

Ugh!!! Some people just don't get that if it's not your dog, you should just leave it alone. And you especially don't hit a dog on the NOSE! I hope Brady is OK.

You were totally in the right! My dogs will jump on people also and I try to reinforce the 'no jump' rule, but sometimes they will. But for someone, out of the blue no less, take it upon themselves to hit them!, arrrgh I totally agree with your actions or reaction I should say. If anyone visiting my house, and visiting is the operative word, ever laid a hand on them in a forcefull manner, they would be escorted out of my house with my boot (or flipflop, it is summer you know LOL) lodged in their butt :) If he was uncomfortable with Brady then he should have said something to you and not just take it upon himself to hit him on the nose. DUMB DUMB PEOPLE.
Some people just don't understand that dogs have feelings and shouldn't be treated like dirt. Would you smack a child in the nose for running up to you? Doesn't make sense to me.

Good for you....what a jerk he was. Princess is bad to jump on people too. Sometimes she acts like she gets it, and will just sniff at their feet. Other times she is all over them forgetting what we've been teaching her. I wouldnt take to nicely to someone hitting her either.

Well, also, he was not uncomfortable, I think he was just trying to be a big bad man and show me how cool he was and how he could get MY dog under HIS control. that is what it seemed like, and HE was trying to tell me what a good dog I had and all this like he was some sort of expert. Believe me, I know how good he is and how much he loves people and other animals, dogs, cats, etc. I can definitely say he loves people more than I do probably. Lately, I can only relate to dog people. ;) Just kidding, I try, just some people just do not use their best judgment.

hope your friend took a good hard look at her date..and dumps him soon..i absolutely must see that movie MUST LOVE DOGS...at the apartment complex where i lived Aaron was 4 and got his football (nerf) stuck in a bush. He got a stick and was trying to prod it out and when that didn't work he took the stick and whacked the bush. The man sitting on the stoop next to the bush took the stick away from Aaron and whacked him across the bare back with it.hard enuff to raise an angry looking welt..i saw it from across the courtyard. The courtyard was a square with the building going all around it..there were a dozen children playing there at anyone time so it wasn't like Aaron was doing something he shoudln't have..i headed over there now..NO ONE IS GOING TO HIT MY SON>>I DON"T HIT MY SON..and i went there to make sure that man understood that one thousand percent..the guy punched me in the breast..right there infront of the whole world..i was so angry i called the police. They came and asked me what i wanted them to do..i said to make sure that sorry old drunk understands that if he lays a hand on another child he will rot forever in jail. They gave him a hard hard time and a warning. I never had a problem again with him. I feel the same way about my dog..if someone came in my home and did that they would see the door...really hope your friend sees a red flag when it is presented..she needs to find a different kind of guy. If he would hit a dog in someone's home..what is he capable of doing in his own?
as to jumping on guests..i have always put my dogs in the bedroom when people first come over until all is settled down..that way the dog can hear the people and adjust his excitement..then if the dog is still young enuff to want to jump on a guest..i bring them out on a leash and insist on a down stay. Eventually they will be old enuff to have good manners. Mary always trys to give a guest a toy..don't know when she started it, but as soon as company comes she picks up her favorite toy and presents it to them....we always say just take it thank her and give it back which they do..then she lays down and is satisfied..if they don't take the toy her feelings are so hurt. Victor has picked it up from her..yesterday when my daugher brought over the baby boy and set the car seat down on the floor while she unloaded the diaper bag, Victor brought his blue bunny stuffed thing and set it on top of the cover to the car seat..thought it was sweet of him :)

Yeah... be thankful. Because I'm single and constantly holed up in my house with Hunter for just that reason :(

Completely understandable. I hate it when people feel they can just do that to someone elses dog. That's like the time my friend came over to "play" with Rocky when he was young and threw a pillow on him. Rocky yelped and I said something along the lines of, "What the hell?" And told him if he hurt my dog I would kick him in the face.

He's so used to beating his dogs. He has 2 labs that he brags about punching in the face all the time. I don't ever really talk to him anymore.

EliNHunter - I completely believe that you will find that dog loving person for you one day, so don't give up. :D There are many caring, dog loving people out there. We jsut have to find each other.

My husbnad's sister has a Mastiff and he is so sweet. Her last boyfriend hated dogs, and of all people to date, he dates someone who not only has a Mastiff, but that dog is her life (as we all well know how that is... ;) ). Well, they eventually broke up and now she is getting married in December to a man from Romania who LOVES her dog so much, and all dogs for that matter. Brady crawled right into bed with him when they came to visit and he loved it. You should have seen the two of them...LOL!

My whole point is you never know where your dog lover may be...

Good thing you got rid of that friend. How horrible he is! I would have been very upset too if I were you.

Way to go!!!!!! I'm so glad you defended Brady and told that guy exactly what you were feeling. I just love how you explained what you were capable of doing to him. I would never put up with someone doing that to one of my pets.

Smkie, Mary & Vic are 2 of a kind. What a nice idea to bring a toy to a visitor.

Oh, I was... I was. Rocky was just so little then, too. Pissed me off big time. You can't touch someone elses dog. That's stupid.

I agree completely. You should never ever hurt or even try to discipline someone elses dog. I can't understand when people do that, b/c the majority of them wouldn't try to discipline someone elses child. Well, I hope they wouldn't anyway.

Awww... thanks, Bogo. I've already found out my once-boyfriend of four years isn't long-term material (as in marriage) because of my love of my dog(s). Oh, well... good thing I'm not desparate to find a hubby! I always said before while I was married (for almost 9 years) that if anything ever happened to us, all I need is my cute house and a good dog. Guess I got what I wished for!!
