My Betta setup, any advice/ opinions?

Oh for real plants...if you go to plantedtank.net they have a ton of info and a very active forum. Best part, people sell and trade plants so you can get a huge variety pretty cheap. Also, aquaticplantcentral.com has a similar forum

The tank looks nice and spacious! And you have all the basics down. I would remove the plastic plants though, as sharp edges can cut Betta fins. They love live plants and it improves the water condition. My favorites are Anacharis, Java Ferns, Java Moss & Duckweed. They cover the top, middle, and bottom of the tank and require no special care to grow. I go to Petsmart/Petco and scope out their clearance live plants for like $1 each.

As far as cycling the tank, that's optional. I cycled my giant Goldfish tank (with my immortal carnival goldfish), but since my Betta tanks are all 10 gallons or less I opt for 50% weekly water changes. Cycling is mind boggling to me!

Just wanted to point out, though I am pretty sure I get what you meant, cycling itself is not optional. It happens in every tank. Fishless cycling is optional but is the preferred method so the fish are not stressed and hurt going through the cycle.

I am testing my water tomorrow, a friend brought me about 2 liters of water from his balanced tank and I added to mine, this, so I'm told may help speed mine up? I really don't want to wait six weeks!!

He also offered me a live plant, and several neons... I'm told the neons may or may not work with a betta but figure I can remove them if they stress him...

I did take the hard plants out and added silk, and a hammock! And he's giving me a " moss ball?"

And...... He offered me a 90 gallon set up complete with stand once he gets his new tank.... Yikes! I told him I'd take it but won't attempt it for a while... Far to green for a tank that size!

Big tanks are easy, just a little more expensive to fill with plants. I use a lot of dead wood in mine. Not even driftwood, cuttings from my willow or pear trees.

Yes, aquariums the bigger they are the more forgiving they are sobrhey tend to be easier.
