This was so funny that I just had to write. Since it's very hot in this part of the world, I usually walk Zeus late at night, around 10 p.m. I'm usually one of the only people out walking that late, but I've never really worried about it. We live in an upper middle-class neighborhood where crime is practically nonexistant.

Last night I was walking Zeus when I heard someone walking behind us. It was a man in a dark jogging suit. Zeus and I take a very weird and convoluted walking route, and when the man was still following us five turns later, I started to worry. As we approached a nearby open field area where street lights are at a minimum, the guy suddenly picked up his pace and started getting closer. I had forgotten my cell phone, and despite his size, Zeus has all the protective instincts of a Tootsie Roll pop.

Zeus started noticing the man was getting closer, and kept looking back. His head came up and his tail started wagging. When he started getting pretty interested, I suddenly stopped, grabbed Zeus around the neck and said sharply "No! No bite!"

As Zeus started straining and whining to reach the man, I held him, acted like I was jerking his leash and getting anxious, and kept repeating "No bite!" I just prayed the stranger couldn't see my dog's tail wagging like mad. I called to the man, "I'm sorry, he gets weird around strangers, but we're working on it." The guy hesitated, then abruptly took the next turn in another direction. I headed straight home as soon as he was out of sight.

I still don't know if the man was really anything to worry about, but in retrospect, it was pretty funny. All thanks to my aggressive bodyguard. :p

What a great reaction you had Gempress; quick thinking helped. I'm glad neither of you got hurt. Please be careful on your walks, you never know who is out there even in the best of neighborhoods.

And how nice of Zeus to play along. ;)
Yes, he is a remarkable actor. Maybe I'll get him into television, LoL.

No, I didn't report the guy. Truth be told, I actually felt a little paranoid and silly afterwards. But that is a good idea. I'll go ahead and call, even though it is a little late now.

LOL that's funny. I know that if they needed to, Colby and Tippy would attack someone for me, but May is a little too kind-hearted. I think she might give a few barks, maybe attack, but I'd probably have to do the same thing you did...I've actually thought of that before.

Heh that's awesome!!! What a good boy Zeus is! I walk mainly at night too and OC's given a couple good growls at people who were threatening in his eyes so I feel very confident with him

Glad you are ok. That was goodthinking. But I had to laugh as I pictured your big dog Zeus wagging his big tail while you are saying don't bite, don't bite. Zeus might suprise you though, If someone actually did try to hurt you. Anyway I am glad you are ok and I am sure you were scared to death. Maybe you should try walking earlier in the day for awhile and possibly change routes just in case this man is questionable.

Glad you are okay. Our chessie was the same way. He looked "big and scary" but would only lick you to death. By the way, I think Zeus is super cute...

Glad you are OK but be careful in future.
We once saw a flasher so I taught my Merlin to speak on command. I don't think he would hurt anyone and wouldn't want to put him to the test, but the noise would frighten someone off.

That is so funny. I bet if you was in real danger Zeus would defend you. Years back a story went out about a family who had a break in while they was home. The family was in real danger but the family dog attacked the man and saved the family. In the interview this man said they were shocked that the dog reacted like this because this dog loved everyone, never met a stranger. Dont think Zeus would ever just stand back and let someone hurt you.

Wow, quick thinking! And it's a good thing Zeus is vocal about wanting to be petted. :)

Sawyer did something like once; he saw a group of people walking up the hill from us and it was about 10pm...he gave a couple of deep barks and had a very tense and aggressive stance. He wouldn't take his eyes off the group or relax enough to go potty until they had gone out of sight. Usually he either ignores strangers or wants some lovin' and his barks are more along puppy-yips to "play with me!". I was proud of him.
