I think it's funny because the first time I saw them I was all "why would they need to make a cat look like that? It must suck to be shaped like that!"

:rofl1:

I was watching videos about them and they are so **** cute! at first I thought they might not move around well but they get around just as well as other kitties, kinda like a corgi/longer legged dog kinda thing.

but the funny thing about the videos is, SOOO many people who have these cats also have corgis lol

Who can resist the lil bunny legs?! lol

LOL @ PW. They are cute. Do they have any health issues?
I've read that they don't actually have back problems like corgis/dachs/etc because the spine of cats are different than dogs? Don't remember how reliable the source was, but if it's true I thought it was interesting. Although I can see that the spine might be different, just based on how much more flexible cat backs seem to be.

I've been doing some research and it doesn't seem so.

You have to breed one "normal" cat to one munchkin cat to get a litter, 2 munchkins will create some embryo problem or something...

in a healthy litter some will be munchkin and some will be "normal legged"

"Munchkins owe their short legs to a naturally-occurring genetic mutation, and not from human manipulation. The gene responsible for the breed's short legs has been likened to the same one that gives Dachsunds and Welsh Corgis their diminutive stature. However, since the spine of a cat is physically different from that of a dog, Munchkins do not suffer spinal problems sometimes associated with those canine breeds."

I was suprised the find out the breed is actually quite old! and the whole mutation thing I find fascinating..

I think most of the breed characteristics are man just capitalizing on natural mutations, I would hesitate to say that these cats are not manipulated (if you breed intentionally for any trait you are genetically manipulating that breed or species)

But its nice to know they are healthy cause they are very cute.

Hahaha I remember a few weeks ago our pet of the week was a pair of kittens, and the guy from the shelter was telling us about these. And my first response was "so it's like a corgi but it's a cat??"

I feel sorry for them because it would affect their functionality.

And I know that hairless dogs/cats are mutations, but they can run, climb/be awesome.

I don't know it looks stranger/more awkward to me than corgis do. Meh, ignore me, can't express myself today.

Aren't they ADORABLE!?!?!? My sister and I saw them on "Cat's 101" on animal planet, and ever since have been DYING for one! They're precious! I saw one on craigslist a while back, and nearly passed out, but of course my dad said no.

I met one in at work. It was the CUTEST little thing. Although I did feel sorry for her, because she couldn't jump or climb like a normal cat could. Didn't seem to slow her down any, though, and I guess it isn't any different than a short legged dog not being able to jump as high as a long legged version! And I also tend to feel horrible for smooshy faced cats, too...can't really catch a mouse when you have no nose. I like street cats. :p

ETA: They're kinda like ferret cats! :D

I was thinking "great, I've just about come to grips with DOGS with no legs and they come out with a CAT VERSION?!?!"

They are cute though.

I can't say I like the look of them at all, but that's just my opinion. It's very difficult to find a healthy one here as the majority are purely used for money making.

See, you're a greyhound person. If you're like me (I have borzois) I see an Abyssinian and swoon, lol.

They are cute though. It's too bad some breeders are breeding unhealthy animals. If they are just doing it for money, then it's probably like breeding any animal for money without regard for other traits and there are going to be health/temperament problems.

Oh its over.

I NEED ONE

lol I've been subconsiously googling them. and I think I just may be obsessing a little

but they are seriously the cutest cats I've ever seen

I have seen them move/play and see no REAL limitations (its similar to seeing a corgi and a lab play.. its not that the corgi is disabled or whatever, its just different)

My mom is also a sighthound/ballerina dog person (skinny dogs..long legs..) afghans, standard poodles etc...
and she hates these cats. lol she was like "OMG! NO!!"

So it really is a matter of taste I guess lol I think they are the cutest things like..ever..

I remember hearing somewhere that there was a massive outcry because of bad breeding. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole because, like merle to merle you can have massive issues.

Although they're cute, they're exploited by humans to the hilt. I don't like it when humans *&@# up animals by exploiting mutations which make them so very unnatural, preventing them from doing things that they should be able to do (jump etc) To me, it's a another sad and disgusting thing humans do to animals for the purpose of novelty and making money from them. I have heard too, that they don't have the same back problems and so forth as some dogs with like mutations. But it still rubs me the wrong way.:(
