HI

Having a problem with my dog, all a sudden today his mouth is going nuts. Like his bottom jaw keeps "shaking". You know how dogs look when they act like they are "Talking" well his bottom jaw is doing that movement...and constantly, like quivering.

Can't find anything about it online because I don't know exactly what to search for...anyone have any ideas?

Austrailian Shepherd and about 13-14yrs old. Very active for his age, sure doesnt seem to be that old.

Poor baby !!! First check his mouth and make sure there's no stick caught between his back teeth ( bridged from moral to molar.) Other wise I have no clue except maybe a stroke ..... wish I could help more. Sorry it's a holiday weekend.....do seek help. Good luck and let us know.!

Grammy's given you good advice. Check to see if it is sore. Run your hands underneath and on each side to check for something out of place. I had a Terrier who would mis-judge the distance on the steps and knock her lower jaw out of place.

Let us know what you find out. I hope it's nothing too serious!

I have heard of these symptoms before, I will see if I can find what was the cause and post in a while.

Also, this may sound silly, but I know if my dogs manage ti lick bird poo :( their mouths chatter like this?for a short while.

found this and copied, dont know what breed of dog your is?

Q: Dear Dr. Mike, We adopted what we think is a cocker spaniel (he's quite large, but not fat - about 37 lbs) 10 months ago from from the shelter. Right away we noticed he occasionally had tremors - usually one of his back paws would shaking (thumping?) for about two minutes, and then it would stop. Sometimes it would be his front paw. Holding or stroking the affected limb wouldn't help - but the dog seems completely oblivious to these episodes, so we didn't worry much about it. The shaking episodes occur about once or twice a week. Yesterday, however, his jaw was affected. At first I thought he was chewing something very fast, but when I checked him, his jaw was clenched tight and his teeth were chattering, and nothing was in his mouth. This lasted for about two minutes, and it did seem to stress him out. His eyes weren't glazed over and he didn't lose any other motor functions; he just sat there and chattered away for a couple of minutes, then he was fine. Can you tell us what this is?

A: If your dog is a red cocker spaniel there is a disorder reported in them called multisytem neuronal degeneration. I have no clue how frequently it might occur but tremors and balance problems are seen with it. It occurs in young dogs, typically around 1 year of age.

If your cocker is not red it is possible that this problem may occur in other cockers since syndromes often affect more dogs than is initially supposed.

There are a lot of other possible causes of tremoring. Many of them are pretty obscure diseases and it is a good idea to consider asking your vet about referral to a neurologist if that is an option in your area. It is always a good idea to check a general blood panel and have a good exam done by your vet in case this is symptom of a general sytemic problem that your vet may recognize. Canine distemper, liver disease, kidney disease, some hormonal diseases and other systemic or organ system problems can lead to tremoring.

On reading a few sites, it appears dogs jaws may chatter as a result of pain, so it could be possible your dog may have mouth ulcers, or a bad tooth,

man i hope its just a tooth and nothing like the above above post.

its an australian shepherd too.

but...i have noticed once in a while his back leg will tremble...i just hope this mouth thing stops soon, going to check his teeth when he wakes up.

edit: he is up, still doing it too, he doesnt do it when he sleeps or is laying on his side though, only when he is laying flat like with both paws in front of him.

He also likes to jump...alot too. Kind of thought maybe he jumped into the door again ( happens alot ) and banged his face maybe bruising his jaw?

His breathe has been stinking lately too. ( tooth thing )

Anything i can give him for the "pain" right now though? ( tylenol advil etc? )
