More Oakley Problems

So we have still been having problems with Oakley. Everytime we find a solution to the problem of where to contain him and think its the answer he does some HUGE thing to prove us wrong. He was in the bathroom for 2-3 weeks whenever we left then the last time he destroyed the bathroom (had to replace trim, toilet tank cover, toilet paper roll holder, door) so we went with outside because I havent been going many places, its shaded and he had a dog house back there and a 5 gallon bucket of water. (he was a outside dog before us) well just now i put him back there to walk to the gas station for something and he was in the neighbors yard. He had somehow got the grill moved and we found out there is a gate between our yards . So now they are pissed and the rain gutter thing came out with the gate (why its there I dont even know and never noticed it before) and now they have to "replace it" (it just slid out of the fitting, all it needs is to be put back in) and I told them J would put it back in for them.

The next thought is a crate but he didnt do well in the bathroom which is bigger then a crate but not by much (as far as his usuable area)

I just dont get it. Hes fine for WEEKS on end and then all of a sudden goes nuts.

Does he do better with another dog around? We had a foster with separation anxiety who would go craaaaazy when we left. When we crated him in the middle of the action (by Lucy--even though she wasn't crated), he did much better.

No ideal but can you get a dog run for him?

Or even a tie out if its a short trip?

I will second a 5 sided kennel with a concrete floor. You can usually pick up a decent one for fairly inexpensive cost on craigslist. For dogs that are truly suicidal/destructive in confinement you can make said kennel into a doggie version of a rubber room with cow mats.

I wouldn't trust him on a tie out. There's not much a determined Bloodhound can't break loose from.

The SA is a good question, and a crate might be more to his liking -- after getting used to the idea that it's his special space -- than the bathroom, especially since bathrooms tend to be echo-y and carry sound so well. I'm guessing that the less outside stimulus he has the better, or that a secure kennel outside, heavy with a top on it, or a combination of both, depending on how long you're going to be gone and the situation.

Nothing can be done outside or a tie out my yard is just not big enough for it. Cant leave him with another dog because he has shown random aggression towards them if he was crated him and walker would be in the main part of the house together (only place to put a crate that size). The bathroom he was in is in the middle of the house where you cant hear ANYTHING from the outside.

I would never leave a dog alone on a tie out. Weeks on end makes me wonder what is the trigger. I took a dog home in my car once and Victor dug a channel down the middle of my bed. Also a good dog right up to that point. He saw me put Butch in the car through the window.. Dear oakly behave yourself.

Bronki who never ever lifted his leg in a house from puppyhood out once and once only urinated right in the middle of his enemy's bed.

I think a crate is probably your best bet... as long as he's not able to break out of it. Something that won't give him any opportunity to wreck anything or get into mischief while he's home alone.

I wonder too. Oakley hasnt had access to seeing outside (where we are) or anything when we leave. You cant see my dogs if they are in my yard either I'm in a townhouse and im the middle unit and behind us is a chuch field that no one goes in. Today nothing happened that I heard/saw. I literally have no clue its all about the 2-3 week mark too.

Wait. You haven't tried a crate yet? How would you know what he'd do in a crate til you try?

Sorry, short of a doggie straight jacket I can't think of a good non confining tool that will actually accomplish what you're after with any reasonable success rate. You can't expect a dog to be anything but a dog while he is without owner influence.

Since you said you haven't been going out too much, is it possible to start doing crating games and getting him used to the crate without forcing him into for long periods? Like feeding him in the open crate, etc. for a while before shutting him into it?

Hes attacked Layla randomly a few times they stay seperated. Ive tried him in a bathroom that the floor space is equal to his size crate and he flipped out BAD after 2 weeks which is why we havent went with a crate. We are really worried he will REALLY hurt himself thankfully he hasnt yet somehow. It MIGHT work if I crate him in the living room.

I think creates are more den like to dogs than even a small room. Even with a small floor plan, I think a room feels more "open". I'd crate him..using the enclosed plastic type, rather than a wire one.

Is he getting enough exercise? Bloodhounds seem like lazy porch dogs, but they really are dogs that need a good deal of exercise.

he gets plenty of exercise and training. I was thinking a varikennel to but trying to figure out where to put it

If he is randomly lashing out aggressively and is having issues every 2-3 weeks on a schedule, I would recommend a vet visit just to make sure all is in order. And I usually don't recommend a vet visit! But those two things combined, for some reason, are raising a red flag in my brain to something possible being wrong with him. How old is he? Neutered? I'm sorry if I'm missing information you've already shared about him... I'm new

But if the issue does turn out to be only behavioural, a crate is a good try. If you get a plastic one, I would like to suggest - from experience - to put the crate door against a wall. Broken canine teeth from trying to rip off the door are not fun!

oh yeah....if the acting out is every 2-3 weeks and has no correlation with anything else (like Connor coming to visit? Jeremy's work schedule changing? Anything like that?), it could be biochemical, something with thyroid, blood sugar, etc.
