How long until the mothers milk dries up completly? Dix is on some kind of super vitamins that can be passed through her milk and is not good for the babies. They have been COMPLETLY weaned, no nursing what so ever for 2 weeks now. She does look a ton smaller, as if she is mostly dry. Everytime I let them together to play, the babies are 100% determined to latch on, and even though Dix does her best to get them off of her, they get a suck or two! I need to know when it will be safe for the pups to play, to where they can try to suck, but get absolutly NOTHING outta her.

Thank you.

I wouldn't think a suck or 2 would hurt....except they would dry up better if she didn't let them.

Why would you have your bitch on ANY substance that could be harmful to puppies if passed through the milk?

And if you do, why would you not KEEP the puppies off of her?

It depends on the bitch and how much contact she has had with her pups also when they were weaned plays a major role, personally i wouldn't have my dog on any super vits a balanced diet is all a dog need to get back into shape, is there a reason she is on them?

Dixie has tried everything. I have changed her food, added minor supplements, fed her till she refused food. The pups, and this is no lie, nursing, had her looking near death. Her spine was visible. She looked horrible!

As I said, this was last resort. The vet agreed, he said he had rarely ever seen a nursing bitch have such a toll taken on her body.

The pups have been weaned for a long time. No milk at all. However, having said this, they still need to socialize with their mother. She has been apart from them for weeks now. To the point she would lay next to them in their pen, and play withthem through the bars. She'd lick and try to clean them through the bars. They needed to play and be together again.

The pups, as the vet indicated, look as if they are 8 to 10 weeks old. They are actual monsters.(Hehe, have been from the beginning really!!!)These past few days they had just started playing together again. Dixie keeps them on the move as they chase her to try to nurse. She has put on quite a bit of her weight back, and is looking good, all her hair is back as well. It becomes sort of a game w/ her and them, as they rarely latch on, when she tuckers out, maybe one or two will still try, the others just climb all over her face and chew on her.

She may have not been too good a mom in the beginning, but you should see her now! You'd be soooooooo proud. She is so gentle and plays so well. She is hilarious with them.

Thanks

So have you tried milking her? does she have milk? I know you say it was a last resort but personally i feel their must be a reason for her looking so poor and I would want to get to th bottom of it, even when her milk has dried up they will still want to suckle, is there an alternative that the vet could give that isn't a harm to the pups? I always think that if its OK for pups then they drug must be gentle and OK, i steer clear of strong drugs

Shes only got a few days left of it, and she is looking good again. They havent nursed this whole time. Her teats are about gone, but still alittle there.
So, since the therapy is about done, it has done its help. I just want to make sure she is dry. I have tried to milk, I get nothing.

Why not put a t-shirt on her, tied snugly right in front of her hind legs, to help cover most of the nipples - and maybe spritz something not so yummy (bitter apple, bandguard) on any nipples left exposed?

It sounds like this bitch is really not a good candidate for breeding overall. You're lucky to have had healthy pups, but breeding her again could compromise her health and those of any future pups.
