Im going to be moving to Schenectady NY from the Detroit (Dearborn Heights) area, probably late Feb early March, not sure yet. Does anyone in my area have a truck or SUV that gets decent mileage that would be willing to drive me, the dogs, and my stuff? I dont have much, but my bike and bed are the big awkwardly shaped things that make me say truck. If I cant find anyone with a truck, I can leave those items behind and sell them, so if you have a car and are willing to do it, still message me please. Thanks! Of course will be paying you in gas and snacks

Have you looked into renting a moving truck? That's what we did and it was a great experience.

Yah, cheapest Uhaul was like $300 and I dont have a licence anyway. Even with a gas guzzling truck the gas would only cost me $110 round trip, and Im hoping to find something with better mileage (calculations with a midsize SUV were $78 round trip). On a budget here, with not a lot of time to save or plan. No rest for the the wicked, sort of fing

    Curious where you calculated that?

I've got a 2010 Pontiac Vibe that's rated at 26 mpg highway. Realistically, the 26 mpg is assuming that there's no extra weight, everything's tuned up perfectly, you're driving that ideal 60 mph, etc, but we'll guess 25 mpg for the sake of figuring a few things. They list my tank as 13 gallons, but I have never fit much more than 11 gallons in it. So for a quick bit of figuring, we'll say 275 miles to the tank. It generally costs about $33-38 to fill my tank, depending on if gas is closer to 3 or 4 at that point, so I'll just use $35. Using generic city centers (Dearborn Heights to Schenectady), it's about 620 miles one way - going through the US.

I don't know if you have a passport or if the person who would drive you does, but you'd both need one, and I don't think you want to drive through Ontario with your dogs (if you're even allowed to). So at 1240 miles round trip (not counting how far your potential driver might be from you. For instance, I'm approximately 70 miles away), divided by the guesstimated 275, you're looking at about 4.5 fill-ups (realistic to round up to 5 considering we're counting everything as ideal situations and highway driving). That's about $175 - but it's also sending your driver home with an empty tank, so you'd probably want to make it $210 so they can refill when they get home, since we're assuming the journey was started on a full tank.

I'm not trying to pick or anything, I'm really just puzzled by the $110 with a "gas guzzling truck" or $78 with an SUV. The $210 for my fairly fuel efficient Vibe (it's not my Cavalier or Sunfire, which used to get 30+ on the highway, but it's still good) suggests that a truck, which would be more in the 18-19 mpg range (looking at a '09 Silverado for an idea), would be quite a bit more. Just something to budget for.

Yup. With my truck, a Chevy Avalanche, I'd figure on about $300 for gas. That'd give me some wiggle room.

ETA: That's staying in the US.

I'd be wanting more than gas money and snacks if I was driving my boyfriend over 1000 miles, never mind a stranger!!!!

I'd want gas money, all food, money towards wear and tear to my car and overnight provisions at a MINIMUM!

You might haunt craigslist for someone going that way anyway that is willing to haul extra stuff/passengers. You'd only need to pay one way instead of for the return trip then. Also, if they're already making the trip you might not be expected to pay the full gas/food/lodging tab.

Consider whether the big stuff is worth taking along. Beds are cheap and easy to come by if it's not a brand new $1000 orthopedic mattress or something. If the bike is nice enough it might finance your move. If not, then at the very least it could be slapped on the roof rack of any size car. Cheap bikes are easy to come by if it's not a great bike too.

Well, 625/20 comes out to 31 gallons. Or about $110 with $3.50 gas. Ontario still has a breed ban, so no shortcuts.

Then they have to drive back. I think "round trip" has changed meanings.

4wd F150. Taking the shortcut through ONTARIO.

Since you don't have a license, you might also not be aware how sucky 6 hours of driving east of the Mississippi is. 12? No... so factor in that motel room too.

FINALLY getting google maps to work, looks like going round the long way is 619 miles, so taking all my large items is definitely positively out of the question. SO. one human, 2 dogs, a few boxes of stuff. Much easier! and cheaper. and yes i have no issue factoring in a hotel stay of course, just didnt occur to me. im careful with my money, not an asshole

Here's an article with tips on ride-sharing:

1100 miles to put on your car is a lot to ask for (and that's if someone is right where you currently are). I think you'd have to also pay some more for wear and tear on a car, tires, etc. than just snacks and gas.

well if someone wants to offer but needs more money then we can probably talk. telling me all the reasons this wont work and why im an idiot isnt helpful. i dont have the option to just not move, so whatever i need to do to make this happen, be it leave everything i own behind, be it pay more than i can reasonably afford, i have to do it.

Do you know anyone in NY? That might be another option for help. Or you could do a halvsies thing where the MI person meets up with a NY person half way, thus cutting down on overnighting and wear and tear expenses for each person.

Aye Im looking into that stuff too. Also checking the CL rideshare areas for things west of me, have found a few people starting in chicago and going to NY, but they are leaving today/tomorrow

did some price quoting on rental cars if i can get someone to drive the rental for me, and thats over $300 one way by itself, even for a little ford focus/chevy spark/etc. this would be bloody easier if i had a car myself but i dont and i cant.

How long/why are you moving? Is getting your license an option (although I wouldn't recommend a new driver drive from MI to NY...but...)?

Are you moving tomorrow? Because you can get your license in a day, at least a temporary.
