Tonight I was flippin thru the channels looking for something to watch on tv, stumbled on Newlyweds (jessica Simpson). I have never watched the show before but I caut them showing Nick giving Jessica a puppy. Then showed coming up Nick saying they'd need to get a trainer. So I decided to watch a little of it. They had a dog trainer come in to help teach them a few things. One thing was this puppy was pooping on the carpet, Nick would rub the puppy's nose in it. The trainer told him not to do that but suggested making the puppy sit next to it for 10 mins. She brought in some kind of portable cage like thing with no bottom, put it around the puppy and made the puppy sit next to the poop for 10 mins. I have never heard of doing something like that.

Has anyone ever heard of doing that to a puppy when it has accidents in the house? I just dont see what good that would do.

To me I don't see how it will work because the puppy won't want to be around it and if it is forced to sit by it for ten minutes after it has done its thing the puppy will make a quick desposit and flee to go and hide so it don't have to sit by it's poo.

That's the dumbest thing I ever heard of. Not only is it mean and degrading, but the dog has the very probable potential to become so use to sitting by it's poo, that it won't bother the dog in the least and so if it poos in it's crate or anywhere else, it's not going to mind being near it. It's better to keep it in the dog's mind that poo is something kept outside away from it's living quarters.

And besides that, a puppy doesn't mean to poop in the house. He just hasn't learned yet and he may not feel it coming ahead of time very well. Good heavens! Why do people go to such dramatic lengths to try and train a pup???????

It's hard to believe people still rub their dog's nose in their poop. Oye.
Sitting them beside it is just as stupid.

When do you think society will learn that degrading someone teaches nothing..it only causes resentment. I cringe when I am in the grocery store and hear someone doing to their child...or their spouse. I don't think a dog can comprehend why you would do such a terrible thing. I read that if you took the scent receptors out of a dogs muzzle and set them side by side they would cover the same amount of space as the dog is big. I heard a story of a drug dog that would not pull off of a tankcar of gasoline. They searched the truck, the wheels, everything, but when they tried to pull the dog off, it was so insistant that they drained the gasoline out and guess what they found. I have never understood how a dog could smell grass through something as fumey as petrol. CAn you even imagine? There was a post about alterinative to shock collars using scent instead of electricity. I am not sure that is a more humane method when you think about it. To rub a dog's nose in it is just plain mean and nothing else.

Well from a scent perspective, I'm sure the dog doesn't mind sitting by it's poop. It'd be much worse punishment to make it sit by your bottle of perfume. It just doesn't teach the dog anything.

Well I have to agree with everybody on this one. I am so sick of all these dimwhitted-slightly-talentled celebs with their stupid problems. Gosh maybe we could get them to hire a trainer to make this couple sit next to their poo and see what it does for them.
I bet that would change the frozen dear-caught- in- the- head- lights expression of Jessica Simpson. I can hear her husband saying "Ohhhhh Jessie look what you did now sit next to you poo you bad bad little girl".

Sad for the pup
