Looking for a small breed

I would really like a dog, iv been on my own for a little over a year now i have a good job and i go to school, but i only go to school two days a week about 6hrs. I live in a 1 bedrm apt. I work mostly nights so i need i dog that wont mind sharing time, im not really looking for a puppy but somthing that stays small and somewhat hardy. I have a bossy cat. I was thinking a chi or a daschound. I really like toy/min poodles cause they dont shed but i doubt i'll be able to keep up with all the hair, my mother had a min poodle once, and she claims to have brushed it everyday but it was always scruffy looking, so every three months she took it to get shaved down.OK..

Any suggestions?

Well first off every breed sheds to some extent. Some just do significantly less then others. I am not to sure on breeds though. I would suggest rather then looking into buying a purebred to go to a shelter and tell them your specific situation. They can match you up with a dog that is perfect for your daily routine. I would definately not get a puppy at this point. You really need a full grown adult dog. Just ask around at the shelters by you and they can help. We could all recommend one particular breed but all dogs vary slightly and you could follow our advice and still no get what you are hoping for.

Think of your future. Plan on getting married? Having kids? Moving? You need to take all those things into account when thinking about getting a dog. Maybe if your future looks hectic you should wait a while before getting one...small dogs can live up to 20 years. If you want an adult, there's no better place to look than in shelters. Petfinder is an excellent tool to find a pet up for adoption in your area. Every dog has an individual personality, and there's one in a shelter out there, somewhere, that's perfect for you. Make sure you can make that commitment for at least 10 years or more, however.
