Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have a little girl, pound puppy, that has developed diarthea in the last 24 hours. I brought her home 5 days ago. At first, her bowel movements were fine. In the las 24 hrs her stool has gotten pretty loose. No blood, but I am concerned. I have just spent mega dollars on my old guy that had cancer. My credit card is maxed out. Does anyone have a home remedy for puppy diarthea? Any advice? Thank You, LillyLover

Watch her very very closely. Diahhrea can arise just from stress or switching to a new food, but can also mean a potentially deadly illness like parvo. One pup I took care off developed parvo a week after she came home. It started out with just diahrrea, but there is a particular "smell" to it...hard to describe; kind of rotting metallic-y. It might be nothing, but diahrrea in pups always puts me on edge.
You can try to give her a spooful of canned pumpkin (plain, not the pie mix) and see if that helps. But if it keeps up for more than 12 hours, get her to the vet.

Hello and Thank You for the response. I asked the SPCA what she was fed. The response was: "Whatever is provided by volunteers or freebies from grocery stores". I have been feeding her Science Diet for Puppy/Small Bites. She is eating well and has the normal amount of energy for a pup. I am afraid that it is possible that she is younger than the SPCA thought. My Vet said that she is @ 8 wks. My gut is telling me that she is much younger--possibly under 6 wks. Yes, if she does not improve by tomorow, we will be going to see the Vet. Again, Thank You for your interest!

Good luck with the yams! You could also try calling your vet before actually going there--see if they have any suggestions or have any additional information about the shelter.
If you would like to save some money on that maxed credit card, I would suggest you switch from low-grade Science Diet to Canidae (a much better food that costs less).

It might be a case of Coccidia developing from the stress. If so the pup needs to be seen by a vet. Coccidia is a bacteria that is in the digestive system but at times of stress it can flourish and multiply and cause them to be sick. An antiobiotic can get the pup over fairly quickly but if you don't get treatment the pup that has it can die. I never fool around with watery stools. If it is only soft, loose stools like pudding then it might just be the change in food or who knows with a puppy. It is common for a puppy to have one or two loose stools and then next one will be fine. But if it is watery or squirty and lasts for 12 hours then the pup needs to be seen by a vet.
Yes, we will be off to the Vet today. I did take her for a vet check but it was very cursery (sp?) or quick and no depth. They weighed her and looked her over and that was pretty much the extent of it. Yes, will vet this morning. She is still eating well and has normal puppy energy this morning.

LillyLover, you should really go check out www.dogfoodproject.com. It's wealth of information about dog nutrition and what's actually in the foods you feed. The Dog Food and Recipies forum on this board too is a great place, and the lady who runs the DFP is also around quite a bit here.
For an easy answer, most vets know diddly-squat about nutrition and that the reason they sell Science Diet is because A) their "nutrition course" in vet school was delivered and sponsered by the makers of Science Diet and B) they get financial kick-backs for selling the food out of their practice.
