Well everyone has sure built up the suspense. Who'd have thought I would be this into the delivery of puppies. Btw, initially I had no clue what "whelping" meant. I caught on pretty quickly though.

I had to join in with everyone else and wish you the best. I will say a prayer tonight.

I guess it's a good thing I just picked up on this thread and haven't had to wait the several days the rest of you have. I am not a very patient person.

Good luck!

Hubby built her a whelping box. But she refuses it. She has always been alittle "confused" about her cage. The other dogs were easy, they have their cages, they have their time out areas and eating areas. Dixie has ALWAYS used her cage for all 3, and we have tried to change that. It is like her "secure" area. If she gets into a bit of trouble, she runs to her cage. If she has a sick tummy, to her cage, time for bed? Cage....Just to get awat...cage. To her for some reason, the cage is a place for all actions, even feeding time! I have tried and tried to get her in that box, yet she gets up, looking as if she doesnt want to hurt my feelings, and goes to her cage.

I figure if she MUST have them in there, then I would quarantine off the entire dining area from all traffic w/ baby gates and the doors, and let her have the whole area she can nurse when she needs to, and when she needs a break, she can get away from them.

Should I FORCE her to use the box??? She just seems so much more at ease in her cage. Heck, we dont even shut the door on it, she's got a little kitty holding it open like a door stopper. Blanket, pillow, toys, looks like my kids bedroom! Was gonna hang curtains for her!!!What if I move them to the box and hide the cage after she has them?

YES. You MUST make her use the box. Close the door to the crate. Put some loose newspapers in the box, and let her scratch and tear them up to her heart's content, but yes, you need to insist she use the box.

She needs to be acclimating to the box. This should have been going on for the last couple of weeks so she would be used to it.

Get busy on it right NOW.

You can't have a bitch whelping in a cage.

1) you can't get to her if you need to help.

2) you can't see what is going on

3) if she decides to "den up" and refuses to come out, you are in a pickle

4) way too easy for her to crush puppies in a cage

5) She needs to be as used to the whelping box as possible BEFORE the puppies get here.

I would feed her in the box, put her bedding and toys in the box, pet her in the box, and make sure she has papers and stuff in there to shred.

My bitches sleep IN the box for 2 weeks prior to whelping.

You really can't help her in the cage and it isn't safe with the wires and no roll bar. Redy, what if she took off the bottom of cage and placed it ( bottomless cage ) in the whelping pen until things start ? I hate to see her, in this state of confusion , not having her den . I agree, these things should have occured a few weeks ago.

ONe thing that helps some girls is to "tent" the box. If it's tall enough, just drape a blanket or sheet over it to help give it more of a private feel.

If it's not tall enough, cut some doweling, tape them in the corners, and drape over those.

She should be secluded from the other dogs with the box.

For me, I'd just put the crate away for now.

No changes. Shes in the living room now. Im trying to pursuade her to the box. Maybe this will be all night, or tomorrow.

The cage is actually 5 foot long, 4 1/2 wide and 4 foot tall. I can stick my entire family and he rin there! It takes up nearly half of my dining room. But i have dragged it outside for now. I cannot take the bottom off. The tray comes out, but there is wire throughout the bottom. So I cannot plave it over the box. She will be ok. Ill lay with her, sh eis acting if that is what she wants anyway!

Im gonna take a shower, took a short nap. Ill check her temp again later.

I let jessika whelp in cage that i had dapted, but she was a much smaller dog in a huge cage and I could easilt get to her. A normal cage isnt a safe place for the pups so if you must use the cage you will need to make a lot of changes to it, and you are running out of time, I can send you pics if you want they may help

At least put in roll bars..... I can't see how you will manage removing the pups as more come along without a lot of effort.

Goodness, this is worse than any soap opera on tv. I have been following since the beginning, and I feel as if I am the one that is going to be there. The suspense is killing me.
I went thru one litter of puppies when I married my first husband. I was a nervous wreck. Of course no internet back then, just many calls and visits to the vet. Thankfully my best friend was his assistant. She came over the night the puppies were born. I swore I would never go thru that again. Now, mine are spayed. I feel like I am going thru it again. lol I can't wait for pictures.
