at our kennel a white was born rarely..usually stillborn. The ones that did survive were weaker. i have seen lately a breeder in dog fancy magazine that specializes in white labs. I would warn your friend to do the homework bigtime on this before investing their heart in a dog that could have health weaknesses that can run into big vet bills, or a shortened lifespan that will leave them heartbroken.

Yes, I have and I've met one also. I would warn you friend also. Don't want to fall onto the "white!!" wagon...lots of irresponsible idiots breeding them for nothing but $$$.

White dogs (with white skin...not white dogs with pink or dark skin) are unhealthy mutations. You should never encourage someone breeding them on purpose. These dogs frequently suffer their whole lives. They have skin problems (dryness, flaking, infections, sunburn), eye problems (sun sensitivity, blindness, infections, malformations), emotional problems (obsessive/compulsive behavior, unreasonable aggression), and a host of internal problems (circulatory disorders, deafness, muscular deficiencies, liver disorders). These dogs should be taken care of and loved just as every dog had the right to be taken care of and loved, but no one should encourage the practice of breeding unhealthy animals for profit.

I had a white Dobie and from the day she was 10 weeks old, she struggled through cancer, deafness, a herniated stomach, degeneration of her muscle tissues, and a number of other problems. She cost a fortune to keep. She couldn't leave the house without sunblock and dark doggy goggles. Of course I thought she was the most beautiful animal on earth, but I think that of all my pets. I turned her over to a wonderful family when she was 2 years old, and they diligently cared for her until she died of cancer at 5. She was a beautiful soul trapped in a miserably unhealthy body. What broke my heart was watching her trying her hardest to be a normal dog and not being able to do the things she loved. Tell your friend to think again before she buys the puppy and encourages the breeder to keep producing them.

Yes don't be fooled I am a Lab breeder, all they are are deviations of the main three colors...that is Yellow, Black or Chocolate.

Yellows can vary from almost white to deep rusy yellow..Blacks are nothing more than all black and Chocolates are all chocolate and nothing else.
Check the pigmentation of the white lab, if it is not black then it is not true to standard and would never be any good in a show ring. (pigmentation is round the eyes, the nose and the mouth, this should be completely black)
The only color with a different pigmentation is the Chocolates, theirs MUST be liver and nothing else.

Whoever breeds Silver or White labs are on a money making gimmick. Ask to see the champions in their breeding papers, see how many of them come up trumps.

Oh and another tip, I forgot, ask the color of the parents eyes. They should either be hazel or brown...Yellow is a fault and not acceptable.

I held a few white ones that were born out of black parents, or a black and yellow bred...they were almost always stillborn. without the strength to take a first breath. I would be very careful how i invested my heart here.

There are some very light goldens.....some are close to white at birth...If the tip of their ears are darker, this will be their true color. Pigment is the thing. Dark nose, dark around eyes etc. Liver pigment is bad breeding.

There is in Dog Fancy an add in the back about white labs. I only wish my ol boss was still around to see this. It was always his dream to have the white lab, but he never breed for color, always for intellience and temperment. He loved the light ones that had the black eyes and nose. The ad in dog fancy is exactly that. Old Boss's breeding was excellent. You can't look at my charlie without seeing a prime example of the best qualities a lab can have,,,,big boxy head..etc. I would study, investigate, talk to people that own them what ever it took before i risked my heart. Bronki was the unusual one for the gs pointer. His white color is what made him so beautiful visual..and it is what made me have to put away the best friend i ever had and the one thing that loved me most in my whole life....at 7 years old. I would have given anything..just anything to have him with me for the rest of my life. He was more than a dog to me...a little girl once said she thought of us as 1...smkie and Bronki were a unit...and now i don't have him with me anymore..his intelligence was supreme..his genetic buildup was weak. Tell your friend that for me please. Bronki was not bred to be his color. It was an accident of nature. If someone is breeding them weak they are hurting the one that will love you most..don't support it....if they can in a contract in sure that their dogs are as strong as a black dog out of black parents then maybe it is ok. I simply do not know how they arrived at that color without breeding weaker strains of a breed. I can tell you what is to see a newborn puppy die in the palm of your hand because his little heart is just to weak to pump his blood and his lungs to weak to take more than a few breaths of this earth. I don't know why white is this way...i don't know why i am so drawn to white dogs..finding them artiscally pleasing. There is a great dane..big, black and white that takes my breath away they are so handsome..but i have to wonder..is that why the dane in the gallery is deaf? Too much white? Did someone do this to him just to get the color? It isn't right.

Deafness seems to be a problem that haunts Danes. I don't know if it's tied to the mostly white ones or not, but the Harlequins aren't, I don't think, so inclined to deafness.

Nicco has photos of her Amira, a gorgeous Harlequin, in the gallery, and Torizmojo has the beautiful deaf Dane.

No GREAT BREEDER would sell over the internet!!! Championship dogs get these prices and their breeders are very choosy whom they sell to. A $2000. dog on line is a scam !!
