They were talking about this on the radio last week and I found this news article on the subject. What do you guys think? Personally, I think it's an overreaction. I enjoyed getting my nails painted as a kid--I see it as just something decorative, not really adult. Spray tans might be going a little far, but only because I think there is no real reason for a small child to have a spray tan. Anyhoo, here's the article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/family/8...lers-under-fire-for-sexualising-children.html

Oh give me a break. Sexualization of children? Haircuts, nail painting, dressing up.... Sren't tese thigs most little girly girls do?

Hannah loves to go to Gi Gi's here where theycut her hair, take her back to the "nail salon" (a room painted hot pink with big mirrors and bright lights and a stage they use for karaoke at birthday parties) and a big dress up closet. That's a big day out for her

Disney has the bippity boppity boutique.. I am sure many of you saw the photos in my disney thread. They do up their hair, paint their nails, do their makeup an dress them up like princesses. Absolutely NOTHING sexual about it. It's a fairy tale treatment.

Unless they are dressing kids up in mini skirts and halter tops.... Where exactly is the sexualization?

I remember when my older cousin (who must have been really old, like 12!) painted six year old me's nails for the first time. I felt so grown up and glamorous, and I've always been a total tomboy.

Happy memories.

Yeah, it sounds like they are overreacting. The local Jack and Jill's hair salon for kids has had princess party packages for ages, where you pay to have a birthday party or something in the salon. They have a closet of princess dresses for them to wear, jewelry and crowns, and all the kids get a princess makeover which includes hairwashing, nails, etc.

It doesn't sound much different. Spray tans, I'm not a big fan of even for adults much less children. But then, kids love roll on body glitter too.

The one I heard was for kids who's parents were getting divorced or for some other reason they had a high stress level. Kids do pick up on what's going on- not that a spas going to help.....

Didn't look at this link. I know the one I saw on the news said I reduced the stress level though. Which I still find very shocking since they still go back home. Is it just while they are there?

Eh, it's hard for me to summon much outrage over kids getting their nails and hair done. Because if that's sexualizing, then an awful lot of women are walking around all sexed up right now. Girls CAN have nice things without it being all about sex.

Talk to me when they're wearing age-inappropriate clothes & makeup and maybe I'll be able to drum up some anger.
