Innova to "rich"

So a friend of mine has a dobe puppy a little older than Jazz. This dog has really soft stools all of the time. Recently they were on vacation with a friend looking after their pup. Well they ran out of Innova Large Breed Pupy food while they were gone so the sitter switched her cold turky to the costco brand that she fed her own dogs. This firmed up her stools and she became "normal" over night.

She is wondering if maybe Innova is too rich for her dog and what other brand could she try.

Is Natural Choice or Formm as rich?

What's the definition of "rich" though? Too high in fat? Too many different ingredients? Something completely different?

Kirkland foods have a fairly high amount of beet pulp, which functions as a stool conditioner, so it's no real surprise that the stool firmed up.

I would try to find out if it is the type of protein the dog has a problem with (some don't tolerate chicken or turkey as well, or poultry in general).

Natural Choice (Nutro) is not a particularly good quality food and contains very little meat, so I'd pass on that. Fromm makes nice food but still includes menadione, but everyone has to decide for themselves if they want their dog to be exposed to that long term.

In the Fromm dog food it states "

Menadione Sodium Bisulfate (Source of Vitamin K Activity)

"

Is that the same as "pure medadione"?? Is that the technical term for it?

What would you think of Natural Blance Venision and Rice

As I wrote in my article, Unless otherwise noted, these compounds are summarily referred to as "menadione" in this article to make it easier to read. The compounds are menadione sodium bisulfate, menadione sodium bisulfite or menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite etc., but they are all artificial vitamin K supplements.

As an example how some dog food manufacturers lie to consumers, you also might want to read this.

I would not recommend a venison-based food for a normal, healthy dog, but rather try something that's based on more common protein sources, such as for example lamb. If you make a habit of including a wide variety of meat ingredients, you will not have anything left to fall back on later on in life in case the dog develops allergies.

My recommendation would be to try any of the California Natural varieties, starting with the chicken based adult food. The California Natural line includes some of the same ingredients that Innova has, but in a limited format, so it would be easy to draw conclusions from comparing the reactions to the Innova Large Breed Puppy to the California Natural. If the stools still aren't normal after some time of transitioning, I'd try either the Herring & Sweet Potato, or the Lamb.
