I had spiders in my basement when I moved into my house. There was a hole in the wall and spiders and mice just moved in. Following the spiders were the fluffy centipedes which eat spiders. I hate those!

One visit from the exterminator and filling the hole took care of the spiders. A couple of traps took care of the mice.

I know how you feel!

Ok today is a bit better. Last night I went around with a big water bottle that I had filled with water and added more peppermint oil than was probably necessary. I sprayed every corner and sprayed around doorways and around my bed. I sprayed everywhere that looked like a spot a spider would hang out. When I had gotten home last night there were still spiders everywhere. Today I've only seen a few. The landlord have Josh the stuff needed to patch the door where the gap is. He's paying Josh to fix it and I'm hoping he gets home from work in time to do it today.

Another thing I'm going to do since I've heard such great things about peppermint oil is soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and put them on little trays in every area where we tend to see the spiders. Going to try and see if I can find some candles with peppermint oil in them as well.

Joey also ate a few of them last night. Yayyy Joey!!!

I'm actually surprised that the peppermint oil seems to be working as well as it is. I don't think it kills them but it definitely makes them want to get as far away from where you spray it as possible.

I have DE but I'm not sure if its food grade so I need to probably go get some. Going to sprinkle that everywhere along baseboards and especially all over where the entrance to the basement is. Would it be better to just sprinkle the powder as is or would it mix with water or something to make an effective bug spray? I also have to see if Josh can go around and look for any other cracks and spaces they could be coming in from. I'm not going to let these freaky things win.

Eeeek! I'm so sorry, that sounds HORRIBLE. I had a similar experience with roaches years ago and I'm still traumatized. When my cat woke me up by hunting one ON MY PILLOW I moved out.

DE works great, put some in a line in the doorway, and on the windowsills. Get some caulk and fill in every gap you can find in the baseboards, windowsills, cabinets, etc.

They also have electronic gizmos that repel bugs, if you don't have any small animals (hamsters etc.) it shouldn't bother dog or cats. Something like this:

Bell + Howell Electromagnetic Ultrasonic Pest Repeller

Only the ones I found were cheaper and they had them at Home Depot. Didn't work on roaches (they actually seemed to *like* them, ugh) but might work on spiders.

An exterminator is also a great idea. The place I used to live in would get spiders like crazy (we have black widows here *shudder*), but when they got too bad we had a guy come and spray all around the outside of the house and it killed everything for months.

Good luck. I *hate* spiders too so totally feel your pain.

Are you in any kind of lease or contract for this place?

Honestly, i would find a nice STABLE apartment you can rent for at least another year and come up with a GOOD plan and look for the perfect place. Is it ideal? No. But is THIS ideal? Definitely not. Going from almost moving in with a nut job to being able to stay with inlaws and only a week or two later moving again to another seriously undesireable situation. How are you going to find the perfect place with all this craziness going on.

Find a nice apartment and rent it and have at least something stable. I know that isn't what you want but honestly you need A stable
Living condition while you search. I mean, you say three months at most... What happens if you haven't found the perfect place in three months? Can you still stay where you are? What if the animals or something else become a proble
For the people who Own the place or they are suddenly crazy like the last place and want you out? Where will you go? Etc etc.

Save yourself a lot of stress and drama and SETTLE for a stable living environment for a time. Seriously this is all just CRAZY!

This story will give me nightmares forever. Clowns too, eh? You are a girl after my own heart.

Well, at least you know that there isn't a basilisk in the house!

OMG, that is terrible! :yikes:

I'm not terrified of spiders, but I AM terrified of massive amounts of them everywhere. I couldn't even imagine being there!

I agree with Sparks on this one- you guys really need a stable living arrangement! I couldn't deal with the stress of going from one bad situation to the next!

I only found one in my bedroom yesterday. The rest of the basement still has a few here and there. Josh is off work today though so he's going to fix the door gap issue. I get paid today so I'm going to pick up some of the DE and I want to take the vacuum hose to every nook and cranny again. I really don't want to keep picking up and going all over the place. If we can get this spider issue completely under control then it'll be fine. We can't do an apartment Sparks because we have three dogs and apartments only allow one or two. I've never heard of an apartment allowing 3.

I'm going to try to make the best of this place since its technically temporary. As long as we get the critter issue under control everything else is not too bad.

Is there somewhere you guys can just hang out for a few hours and just nuke the house with this stuff?
http://www.amazon.com/Terro-2300-16-Ounce-Spider-Aerosol/dp/B000GXUKAQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347982638&sr=8-1&keywords=spider+killer

It's not very natural but at this point I say F IT and just nuke the little suckers!

and It's not harmful to kids/pets once it dries.

DE is great, don't get me wrong.. I do use it. but it takes a while (since it works but drying out exoskeletons).. it works as a preventative and for minor problems but for full on infestation I would just go with a more powerful spray.

OMG! I would of died the first time I saw so many spiders at once.
I am extremely scared of spiders, like you, Amber.
More power to you for sticking it out because I would of been gone a long time ago.

And I agree with nuking the place. F that.
You are braver than me, I give you that girl lol

Ya I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be able to stick this out. Now I found a snake. Looked like a black rat to me and I love snakes... But wild snakes loose in my living space oh hellll noooo... And what do snakes usually mean? I'm just waiting to find mice. Got the snake out. Josh thinks nothing else will come in because he put weather stripping where the gap was at the bottom of the door. My thing is even if nothing else can come in now... How many things are already here?

There are some obscene amounts of money you could pay me to live in a house like that, but they would have to be REALLY obscene.

The two things that terrify me most in this world: Spiders and snakes. I have a bullsnake living under my porch that I have grown to appreciate, because it kills all the mice, but if I saw it (I've only seen its skin) I would probably go into a full blown panic attack. I have gotten better about spiders, but if I were to experience what you have, I would definitely be freaking the f out.
