I always pictured Rue as black and thought it was very obvious that that was what the author was describing without having to say "little black girl." I actually pictured her darker than the girl in the movie.
I remember seeing youtube videos of people's opinion on the perfect Hunger Games cast, and many of them cast white girls as Rue and I couldn't help but go WTF. Some people saw Rue as a girl with just tan skin. In the second book when meeting Rue's family, the author descibe them looking like a pack of dark birds huddle together. How more obvious can you get?

i have had in the last couple years NUMEROUS convo with the two older kids.
they have been on ,
jews and there money
any black sterotype you can think of
poor people being of less worth then rich
and muslims , ow those sterotypes are also horrid.
and it is not just my sons i have heard and flipped out on , there whole group of 20 or so friends are ALL THE SAME WAY.
I have even went so far as to call some of the younger ones parents and let them know how there children where acting, there horror matched my own , so it is really not an upbringing thing . as those types of things are never alowed in my home. i dont know where it is coming from actually.

Suzanne Collins did say previously that Rue was African American.
I think it's totally fine if people didn't picture Rue as black.. Hell, you can picture Harry Potter looking like Shaq for all I care.

Racism is gross.
Wow that shocks me.I'm "in touch" with the younger generation and I know most make stereotypical and politically incorrect jokes etc ALL the time but it's because its a joke and everyone they know i from different places.I'm just shocked at how hateful this all seems,their not joking...they honestly don't feel as much sympathy for a character that is black.
I have lost faith in the world!I would like to think this is a "American" thing,I can't help thing there would be less people like that in the UK,they definitely exist though.

I know a lot of kids make racist jokes, and they pick on ALL races, not just one. I just think it's so incredibly tacky and GROSS that those kids would post that **** on the internet. Seriously? Shut your **** mouth. It makes me so angry.
That being said, I DID picture Rue as dark skinned. Maybe not necessarily of African descent, but I thought the girl who played her fit the character really well. Her final scene didn't make me cry like a baby like the book did, but I think that's because I already knew what was coming, lol.

Very sad indeed. But i definitely haven't lost faith in the world. There are a lot of incredible, amazing, giving, loving people out there. Unfortunately no one wants to report on the incredible things people do everyday all over the place... Like the local boy who went in his 3rd or 4th missikn trip to brazil to build a home for a boy who lost his family. While there he was shot and robbed, almost died but all he could focus on was forgiving those men and he can't wait to go back and help people. But you don't hear much about all those people... Instead you hear everything about these kinds of people.
I believe and will always believe that the majority of people are inherently good.

or because I go to a school in new england full of democrats.. lol but either way I have found my generation to be some of the most accepting, open minded age group
Then again, we all go through our phases in high school of stupidity, but even then, it was just STUPID not racist or cruel.
But in college, then 20+ year olds I know, it is basically a GIVEN that you are open minded to all races, religions, sexual orientations etc..

It's not just college. I'm SO grateful to live in an area that is truly an mixture of every possible ethnicity and nationality there is. The school I teach at is amazing. I don't have more than 2-3 kids from any single country in a class at the same time. Korean, Chinese, Bolivian, Peruvian, Pakistani, Iraqi, Ethiopian, Egyptian, and a very small handful of Caucasian students. And everyone intermingles and mixes and I'm just SO thrilled that these kids are the future of business. The fact that they are so willing and ready to learn from each other is awesome.
Racism makes me really mad... it's one of those things that REALLY irritates me. What gets me is that I'm sure MOST people have experienced racism first hand at least once in their lives. It's just so hurtful. Not gonna lie? I didn't really get a realistic view of racism until I moved to Mexico, where blonde white girls are not only the minority, but are pretty openly seen as villainous man-eating sluts.
It SUCKS to be treated poorly because of the way you look, and I certainly wouldn't say that I relate any better to different cultures or that I can say I know what it feels like to be a black person in 2012, but I do know that NOBODY can have a problem with being treated with respect. Regardless of race or age or how much money they make, everyone likes to be treated with respect.
