I saw this on tumblr as well, so sad :(

I am so disappointed in some of the fans over this.. makes me sick to my stomach

I think the young actress who played rue did an amazing job and is a very lovely little girl!

when we read books, we all have ideas as to what characters will look like in our heads.

but to totally dismiss the movie or use that kind of language or to hate on the actress/and the entire movie production over skin color I think is very hateful and wrong.

For example.. I always pictured Harry Potter not looking like Daniel Ratcliffe. His eyes were green for one lol and his hair messier and him taller
but I still think the HP movie producers and Dan Rad did an AMAZING job!

"I just pictured darker skin, I didn't take it all the way to black..."

What does that even mean? It also makes me sad that readers apparently need to be spoon-fed descriptions. An author has to overtly say THIS CHARACTER IS BLACK ?? I always pictured all three characters as black, including Cinna, although I'm not going to go back and sift through the books for descriptions of him because I am too lazy.

Besides, you can picture characters however you like, the books still exist without the movie.

Tbh I pictured Rue as being of first nation descent, but I am not shocked that they picked someone black and certainly not unhappy they did. I actually think she's got the perfect face for it, she's really cute and young and innocent looking :)

That's depressing. And I don't know why but I thought Rue was described as black in the book?

I actually am shocked didn't realise so many YOUNG people would be so disgracefully racist and STUPID.Wtf! Everyone in that book was white to me but that's because I'm a skim reader.I saw the film and didn't care who was black, they could have made them ALL Black/Indian/Chinese as long as they got the story right I don't care!

"And most hauntingly, a twelve-year-old girl from District 11. She has dark brown skin and eyes, but other than that, she's very like Prim in size and demeanor."

Suzanne Collins did say previously that Rue was African American.

I think it's totally fine if people didn't picture Rue as black.. Hell, you can picture Harry Potter looking like Shaq for all I care.
but to make such a negative racist stink over it I think is just awful :(

WOW.... WTF people?!

For the record, I thought the girl that played Rue was cute as a button. I didn't quite picture her as what we think of as "black" when I read the book, but when I saw her on screen I was like, "Oh, sure, that makes sense."

Honestly, I tend to not really think of characters and how they look much...that never really sticks with me. BUT, even if I DID picture Rue as a blond hair blue eyed girl (even though she was explicitly NOT according to the author description) being disappointed your image and the screen didnt match is one thing...saying things that are being said is a whole other ball game. I am just beyond words....makes sense though when you can MURDER a child and get away with it because they may have been up to something....

Yeah, I don't really care what people pictured her as, NOTHING can excuse those comments.

The ones that really get me are the ones that say that the death scene wasn't as sad because she is black

..makes me depressed and kind of sick honestly.

Lots of characters in movies do not look how I pictured them. I don't crap my pants over it and reduce myself to being racist because I imagined it differently in my mind.

I read that book so fast, so I didn't really pay attention to the character descriptions I guess. I know that Rue was dark colored, in my head I pictured like a Native American, or an Indian. I don't know why. Thresh has been my favorite for a while now, and I think his and Rue's actors are perfect. When I saw the trailer, I didn't even think about their skin color, it was just who they picked. I think Rue's actress is adorable and perfectly angel like and innocent looking. It sickens me to see those thoughts.

Ohhh no, you're totally not racist... saying that she isn't innocent looking because she isn't a white blonde kid isn't racist AT ALL.

Rue was exactly as I pictured her, she was precious and perfect for the role. People will always be ignorant idiots... unfortunately.

Wow..... That's..... Unreal? I don't even have words!!

Watched the movie last night and thought the girl who played Rue was perfect, sweet, innocent and nailed the character!!!

I also don't tend to visualize the characters a lot, but did have her pictured as African American....
