I put Mia on a diet

she's a tubster. Gains weight like you wouldn't believe. She's on all raw now... supposedly. She slims down with raw super fast so I'm doing that in the interim.

Things aren't going so well though. I was dog sitting and I brought some treats with me to train the girls with. A bag of Ziwipeak and a couple pieces of chicken for Summer. I figured they were safe in a bag, in a suitcase, in the room I was staying at over the weekend.

Needless to say I walked in the room, my bag was opened, contents thrown out, zip locks shredded, and all the treats eaten. And now she's acting like she feels miserable. Your own **** fault, dog.

I swear she lulls me into this false sense of security and then she does something like this again to remind me not to get complacent.

After stripping my Laekenois I saw how truely portly he is. I've heard that a raw diet is good for weight loss, so I am trying that starting next week. I also have a bunch of green beans if it comes to that.

I'm sending you Webster. He and Mia can exchange notes and, together, no morsel of food will be safe.

Considering he's the punk who moved a chair to reach my training bag (hanging from a hook), ripped out the bottom while it was still hanging, and pulled everything out all for a ziploc with a couple kibble in it, all I can say is......better your house than mine

Then again Mira recently discovered the trick to opening the foot-pedal trashcan so I'm probably sunk anyway.

All food in my house is locked away to an almost paranoid degree. Closed doors + high shelves or inside the fridge. Anyone who teaches their dog to open a fridge is, to my mind, plumb crazy.

Shamoo learned on her own to open the fridge, I seriously can't imagine thinking "hmmm beat trick, this won't cause any trouble". lol

Usually I compare Summer to Meg, but that is such a Meg move. She almost never gets into anything - I can leave an open garbage bag on the kitchen floor with leftovers in it, leave the room, and not worry. I can leave my food on the front seat of the car and go into the store.

But every once in a while, she sees a jackpot worth going for. In 7 years, it's been 4 times that I can think of. One was an entire loaf of cheddar bread I had in my car, one was 6.5 GIANT chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting, left on the tall hutch in our kitchen, one was my turkey wrap (less that 5 minutes after I picked her up at the vet from her tooth extractions, and happened when I was going into the pet store to get her canned food in case she wouldn't eat kibble), and then last week, it was 16 brownies left out to cool on the counter.

She's clever. If she did it all the time, I'd be better about picking up and hiding things. She chooses her moments wisely.

I don't even give the dogs the chance so I don't know if they'd steal anything. Mostly because Grover the cat is such a food hog that everything needs to be locked away from him.

Well day 2 of all raw diet went... poorly. This one was 100% my lapse in judgement. I am sick and had a crappy day and I (foolishly) thought 'How much trouble can she get into in 2 minutes?' Apparently a lot. She busted open a new bag of Zuke's minis and ate about half of them.

Mia is on lock and key from food. Sadly, the room I keep the dog food in usually has a door that doesn't lock. It just pulls shut so Mia's figured out that she can open it. Even on the shelves, it's not safe. I really cannot figure out how the stuff on the top shelf has been removed. There isn't any way to climb it at all. At any rate, food has been removed from said room.

Obviously I am starving the poor girl.

I was thinking I should blame the nosework too. Makes me feel better.

Sounds like Sir! If I have any treats in my purse when I sit it on the floor by my desk when I get home, Sir will wait until I'm out of sight and then hone in on them and destroy the bag and contents.

At least I'm trying to put weight on him.

Recon and Frag are both on diets and think I'm slowly killing them.

Y'all have such talented dogs. I guess my dogs are under achievers. A simple piece of foam core board is enough to keep them out of the kitchen. :lol-sign:

Day three is a success. Day 4 morning I caught her climbing up in the shelves. Solves that issue of wondering how she was doing that. But I think food is successfully out of her reach. But she is determined! Almost admirable how determined she is. I keep reminding myself food drive is a good thing.

I think it's times like these where I'll remind myself that I'm glad Cali isn't obsessive about food. She is very food motivated, but the last time she snuck into something, she ended up with a massive stomach ache and laid around for a few hours feeling nauseous... so I think she learned her lesson.
