I had that same feeling with my old vet. you couldn't go there for anything without them coming at you with a paper filled with listed services that HAD to be done. he seemed a nice enough person, but he was all about money. they wouldn't even look at your dog without insisted it needed a fecal exam (which ALWAYS came up positive for worms..which they then padded the bill with those extra meds) my last straw with him was when he insisted on a complete blood work-up cause my cat had a hot spot...THEN insisted she be on medication (that he sold) for the rest of her life. paleeeese...the hot spot cleared in a week. I finally found a new vet that is wonderful. a no-nonsense kind of guy who only charges what you're there for. I found him thru the local animal shelter.....he helps there, too. it's a drive, but worth it!!! I no longer cringe thinking one trip to the vet is gonna empty my bank account. here's another gripe I had about the old vet....he NEVER let you be in with your dog. maybe it's me...but I like to see what's really being done. boy, I really couldn't stand that guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Wow! I'd find a new vet and let this one know I'm finding a new vet....and would object strongly to $90.00 for 5 minutes of talking. No way! That's robbery.
All the vets I've had charge nothing for a consultation if you're planning on getting something after it (e.g. ear crop, spay/neuter, etc.). $90 is just plain messed up. I have a friend that knows of a vet in her area that charges $400 for a spay! That's a rip off. Around here I can get a spay for like $50. Stupid greedy $400 charging vet. What a way to promote spay and neuter -_-

I am so pissed off at Banfield (attached to Petsmart). I'm on the Puppy Wellness Plan, costs $300 for this year and covers neutering. Today I brought him in to get neutered, thinking it's fully covered by the plan. Guess what, it's not.... extra $18 for pain medication (injected before surgery), $40 for 2 week supply of antibiotics, and another $41 for 2 weeks supply of pain killers. Beware of Banfield, they rape you with overpriced medication and hidden fee's. This is the third time I got raped by Banfield...... RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPE

I dislike vets that have WAY too many appointments at once, spend 5mins with you and your pet, and charge the big bucks. How can you possible know my dog and be able to figure out if something is 'off' if all you do is come in, wash your hands and look at eyes and ears. When the "nurse" who takes you into the room spends more time with you than the actual vet that perscribes medicine, it'd be time for me to switch vets.
my god, you described Banfield perfectly.

I have heard endless complaints about their puppy plan! It's a cruddy way of doing business on their part because they are punishing the good owners that are trying to do what is best for their new puppy vs. the owners that never want to do a thing! Change vets!

imo, i think finding a nice compassionate vet is well worth the search. a few months ago i lost a cat to feline leukemia. they arranged payment, called everyday and got every charge approved. not once did they charge for "consultation".

SOOOOOOOO many vets out there suck. I too had a vet that was always RUSH RUSH RUSH and I NEVER had enough time to ask him all my questions and if I would make him stay longer so I could keep asking he would get Peed off! When I am a vet I am having one appointment every 20 miniutes with appointment block times throughout the day when I see no patients for 20 miniutes (to cover having to spend extra time with a person and dog that needed it) because I think my time is the most valuable service I can give my patients!

I also am gonna do reduced cost spay/neuter for people who can prove they're poor and free for super poor people and shelter dogs :D

My clinic will be canine only and we'll have general practitioners and specialists on staff (I'll be the cardiologist).

I look forward to all the dogs I'll help and all the relationships I'll come into!

Great point showpug! You are right! While I am sure some vets like any other profession in the world, may be out to make more than their share, all I have known are just earning an honest living doing what we ask them to do. The vets I have worked with always tried to give very accurate estimates but I think if they are asked to do something they expect people realize there is a fee for their time and expertise, even if it is to trim nails. Not an easy task usually and often takes at least two staff depending on the size and willingness of the dog.

I thank my lucky stars that I have a wonderful vet. He's not the cheapest in town, but I wouldn't go anywhere else.

In defense of car mechanics (since my husband is one), it can take quite a bit of work to figure out what is wrong with a car. There are diagnostic computers to use, parts to be inspected, tests to run, etc. My hubby can spend a good amount of time just trying to find out exactly what the problem is.

But a consultation that takes five minutes? I understand that you're paying for the vet's time, but I've never heard any vet that charges $18 a minute!

like its NOT hard to figure out whats wrong with a dog?

i think most peopl ehave NO IDEA what medicine actually costs - you guys have health insurance that covers your costs besides copays for mostp eople, you dont know what the actual costs ARE. have you considered the education these "crooks" you call vets are, and what they have had to sacrifice and go through to become a vet?

oriondw - what exactly did your dog go in for? did you see a specialist? what further diagnostics are they running?

for all we know, your dog has some orthopedic problem and needs radiographs - you saw a board certified orthopedic specialist, and youre complaining about that price.

funny how quick people are to jump on the vets case without knowing anything about what is actually wrong. if youre not happy with the vet care, go elsewhere.

so you saw a specialist! then be happy - thats CHEAP :) it costs 190 to walk in the door at the specialist by me, and that includes NOTHING but an appointmnet. you didnt walk in and talk to a general practitioner.

and if you need "shots" i am assuming you have an allergic dog that requires desensitization shots - and the "Testing" is going to be intradermal or blood tests to determine what his environmental/contact allergies are.

if thats the case - then be happy thats ALL its costing you. people typically spend upwards of a thousand dollars running these diagnostics before they have any answers.

bowies cardiologist visits (we got at least 2-3 times a year) = 280 dollars (remember before when i had mya, that was also TWO dogs going each time, and the next visit next month i will be bringing the new foster).

bowies internal medicine specialist = 140 bucks.

bowies neurologist = 200 dollars.

bowies dermatologist = 230 dollars.

bowies surgical consult = 140 bucks.

each one of these was a board certified veterinarian in their speciality.

there are of course recheck fees, his MRIs, surgery, etc :) or his currently 1000 dollar UTI - but i pay for the quality of care i receive, and i am happy with it. i could bring him to banfield easily, but he deserves better care than that. and i want people who are the top people in the field working on him.

I am happy with my vet. She is very caring, takes the time to answer any questions I have. I also adore the staff. The only disagreement we have is the brand of food. She always writes Science diet for the recommended food.

whats funny oriondw, is that if you actually took the time to find out about other people (or for instance, knew anything about who i am and what i do) youd find that statement pretty ironic! my dog isnt a cookie cutter case, and doesn't fit into banfield case algorithms and flow charts -and furthermore im not going to waste my money supporting a corporate veterinary practice that is partnered with an unethical pet store, or a practice that believes that every animal needs every vaccine just because the corporate heads say so (who arent vets!!)

a month or so ago,i just got out of the shower and noticed my floor out in the kitchen was all wet,now i know i did not yet walk there.I then seen my pup well not so little hes a 80lb pitbull, and hes drooling like a waterfall im thinking hes gotten somthing stuck in his throat,so off to the vet,i sat there for 2 hours when the vet came in she wanted to muzzle my dog.I was not happy as he is so docile.I then asked how can you check him over if hes muzzled?they told me they would not examine him unless he was sedated!i was pissed but wanted my dog checked so i allowed them to do so...only to hear his throat is irritated and was given antibiotics, then the tech comes out and tells me his mouths all purple....i then knew he got a pen and chewed it,so all off that crap all could have been avoided if the vet would have just looked in his mouth.ill never go there again and it cost me $300.00

Hum...well they had to sedate my very passive Toy Poodle in order to check in his mouth. I can understand why they must be sedated. The dog is in a strange place surrounded with strange smells with someone he doesn't know looking in his mouth. If I was a vet I wouldn't take that chance, whether be it a pitbull or a toy poodle.

if i had a dollar for every person who told me their dog wouldnt try to bite me well... lets say i wouldnt have much in educational loans :)

its also not recommended to let owners restrain their own animals because if they bite the owner (even accidentally) while at the vets in that situation, the vet can be sued.
