My next 'splurge' purchase will be a new tv FINALLY! Mine is 10+ years old, HUGE (like thick) and makes an awful buzzing noise when it's on. It's really taken me a long time to even think about replacing it.

I'm kind of cheap. My laptop is 5 years old and going strong although it's starting to show some signs that make me worry a little every now and then. I won't replace it until it dies.

I'm considering a tablet for school...not sure yet. My main purpose would be to record lectures and take notes on it as I hate writing. I type very fast on a regular keyboard and I'm nervous that a tablet keyboard will just end up frustrating me and I won't use it.

Although I think the apps on the Ipad are pretty cool, I'm just not big on Macs.

I don't have one, but I've gotta say, they're awesome for airplane flights! I wouldn't have much use for one otherwise, but my uncle's kept me occupied for a while on a flight a couple months ago. On the way back he wasn't with us (they stayed longer) and I definitely missed his ipad.

But for most situations, I wouldn't need or use one. I don't even have a laptop computer. We just got a new desktop because I don't want to be able to use the internet in any room, haha. I feel like it would be too distracting and get in the way of more important things. Maybe not, but I just like having to go to a computer if I want to use the internet. I don't have internet on my phone either.

I would still have a laptop, but it would've been nice to bring on campus. I used to have classes back to back so I'd bring my laptop to pass the time. Having an iPad would've been easier to carry around and use. There's 10 hours of battery life on it as well, so there wouldn't have been a need to carry around a charger either.
There are plenty of students who have them here, freshman-senior. I wouldn't use it if you take notes in class on the computer

BUT I use an app that displays the powerpoints or notes whilst recording classes, and with it's size, I can still have it on the desk with my regular notebook that I take notes on (I don't learn while typing for some reason lol)

It is a LIFESAVER to be able to play back the class recordings and have the powerpoints in front of me to study while also reading my notes.

Perfection!

(but no. it's not a laptop replacement. I wouldn't write papers on it or take notes on it if I did take notes electronically)

I love the iPad but don't own one - I don't find a need to as my dad has his and I'll just use it occasionally. I have an iPhone and a Macbook Pro and can't justify spending the money for an iPad. I know I'd use it, but not enough for me to justify the costs.

I'll have one someday. But it's definitely not as a laptop replacement. I'd probably mainly use it for watching shows and things.

I have no need for the overpriced iPad. The Kindle Fire does the same basic functions, web, email, and surfing. When I need more from it I will root it and install a full Android platform. If I ever need front and rear cameras, Ill buy an Android based tablet that is USB and SD Card capable. I would not pay a premium price for a product that lacks premium features.

I was gifted a 7' inch samsung galaxy tablet. :) I really do have to say, I LOVE it. The designs nice, I have no problems with it what so ever, and it's really nice in school! AND it connects with my android phone. ;)

I would never get an apple product to be honest - because I don't have any other apple products, and it would PO me, that I can't connect with any of my other devices. (I use bluetooth to connect my cellphone to my laptop and such). That wouldn't work if one was an apple product.

Don't have it, doubt if I'll get one but my brother is on his second one and loves it. There's some app that's similar to Skype and he was walking around his house at Easter, showing one of our relatives on the east coast everyone who was there for brunch and all the Easter decorations. We also got a tour of their new house. It was pretty cool.

Probably the story that preceded this: http://gigaom.com/apple/this-american-life-retracts-apple-labor-conditions-episode/

It's not like all the major -- and most minor -- brands aren't using Asian and other low-wage, high production facilities. The Apple plant wasn't special. It's typical.

Anyone who has a flat screen TV, or pretty much any electronics has no room to squawk about the working conditions in an Apple factory.

I would like to say we didn't do apple long before we heard any story like the above, so that has no bearing on our decisions to purchase or not.

But to address your above statement..........for the prices Apple charges, YES, people do have room to complain IMO. If you are paying double (in some cases) the price, it (one would think) should be going to labor costs as well. *shrugs* Just an observation........

I have 5 desktops and 1 laptop. The laptop's hard drive died and I'm waiting for hard drive prices to go back down. I use vonage for phone service. Am I the only one that still has no cell phone (never mind a smartphone)? lol :D I don't want to pay the high monthly fees on top the monthly internet fees.

I've wondered what's going to happen with Nook if Barnes and Noble goes belly up?

You can still load books on them through Adobe Digital Editions, so you could purchase books elsewhere.

As I mentioned, I rooted mine so I read Kindle books on my Nook ;)

Yep, you can use several different extensions with nook..........even PDF :D One reason I went with nook over kindle.

I use Indiana digital library with my nook all the time! I have a library card with our local library and that's used for the online state library as well :) Check it out for 2 weeks, it auto returns (expires) no late fees! I <3 it! So the amount of nook books I've actually purchased in the last year.........about 3, LOL

soo it's all good as long as your product is less expensive thanks to it? IMO if you are going to complain about human welfare, it shouldn't matter what the product is or what it costs. It doesn't become any better for the workers that they are making a $500 IPAD or a $200 like product.

I think apple products are MORE than worth the expense. The everywhere apple stores, apple geniuses, the hand-on customer service all that provides and entails is IMO is one of many perfectly logical reasons their products cost what they do.

I buy clothes that are fair wage or made in America, I research products before I buy them. My parents are from haiti and both are human rights activists, one of whom runs her own charity and women's shelter.. and apple gets A LOT of hate for what it does but honestly, if you are buying an electronic these days, there aren't any "safe options" or "fair wage" options (at least none that worked for us). So I really don't see why apple takes all the flack.

I would love it if apple had better working conditions. Don't get me wrong.
but the attitude of "Oh well since they are so expensive they SHOULDN'T do it but it's ok for X, Y and Z to do it because their products are cheaper" IMO, is totally ridiculous if you are preaching about human welfare.

Now, if you are preaching about what a product is "worth" or production cost vs. price.. then maybe, depending on how you determine price/value.
but I hate it when people make it about human welfare when what they are complaining about has little to do with factory conditions and much more to do with how much they think they should be paying for a product made under these conditions.

And then there's the R&D that Apple invests in that few of the others do. The cheaper alternatives are, by and large, the product of companies being able to reverse engineer what someone else has spent money to develop, so it cuts their costs significantly.
