HW Meds?

Discussion in 'Dog Health Care' started by FluffyZooCrew, Jun 11, 2009.

  1. Is there anything natural you can give a dog to prevent heartworms? I've been looking online but haven't been able to find anything. Sam can't be on anything, and as a result must be tested every 4-6 months until he comes up positive and then we'd have to worry about things from there. And his next test is DUE tomorrow (but will prob. take him next week), and the these things are always nerve wracking.

Or I wonder if there is something I could put on him to prevent mosquito bites? I try to limit his playtime to times of the day when mosquito's are most minimal, but it's Louisiana and it's summer, so mosquito's are pretty much 24/7 now.

Can i ask why he cant tollerate any HW meds?

  4. Because he's highly, and in some cases deathly, allergic to just about everything on the planet. Including the ingredients in HW and flea and tick medications.

  5. Thx for the link BP. I looked thru it this morning, and got some good idea's from Foxy earlier. Going to talk with my vet about the catnip oil (because catnip's a plant, and he's allergic to a million plants, grasses, weeds, ect.) and see if we can possibly try that.

We've tried the Skin So Soft, and that stuff's a joke. :(

Many holistic Vets recommend Black Walnut Extract as a preventative or to treat HW... I would find one in your area to work out a regimen with. Otherwise, there are lots of websites with thorough information about it.

Hmm. Black Walnut Extract is a first for me. I'll have to read about it!

I do have to say that we've not had any problems when I've sprayed the dogs before going out hiking, etc., meaning I don't see any flying things around them at all, which leaves me very comforted.

This is the first year since I've educated myself that I've given the dogs heartworm meds because of the humongous mosquito population, but now I feel so much better having seen the spray in the works.

    Hope you find something, Fluffy.

  8. Thanks BD, I hope so too. Sam just joined the family this year, back in January (I think... or Feb.) and obviously his problems were discovered afterwards. So this is his first summer with us, so it's all a new, nerve-wracking experience for us.

I'm sorry, I know how that feels. :(

Wishing you all the best of luck!
