Hi Guys,

I have a question about humping. My pup is about 5 months now and he started humping a couple days ago. Actually, I noticed this behavior when a friend dropped off his year old male dachshund (neutered) off at our place for us to dog sit him for a couple days. This is when my puppy started this humping thing. At first, I thought maybe he was just mounting the dog to let him know that he's alpha, but this morning I noticed that he actually was erect when I pulled him off the doxie. And then it shrink instantly. Is he going through puberty already?? What should I do? Is this a behavior that needs correction or should I let him be? I should also mention that my pup isn't neutered.

It's a natural behavoir, and no, I don't think it should be corrected per-say, but I do think it should be redirected. Call him, throw a toy, something that gets his attention off what he is doing. And yes, it does sound like he has hit puberty.

Hump him back to show him that you're alpha. ;)

We said, "Herschel!" everytime he started humping anything (stuffed animal, other dog, etc). Now, at 8 months, he rarely ever humps anything.

its dominantion and its normal to become "unsheathed" during domination humping too (its also very normal for females to hump) have both his testicles dropped? if so unless you planning on showing/breeding its time to talk to your vet about a neuter apointment.
untill then redirect, if you see him humping a toy or another dog a simple no and then redirect attention with a toy is usually enough.

Yea, he has two little balls hanging down now! Actually, he's had them dropped for a couple of weeks now. I just didn't realize how fast he was gonna be going to start puberty already! He's still a baby....gosh they grow up so fast! =(

One of my dogs has started humping for the first time in the year I have had him. He's neutered. It's very odd because he's never done it before.
