How to keep coat from drying out

Roscoe is ALL BOY and he LOVES getting really dirty! As a consequence, he gets a bath at least once a week, and sometimes two or three times per week. Our concern is that we're going to dry his fur (and skin) out too much. He's a terrier mix, so he doesn't really have smooth, soft, fur to begin with, but we want to keep his coat healthy. Any recommendations about how we can do this with his frequent (sometimes more frequent than others) baths?

Using a gentle shampoo and then using conditioner afterwards should do the trick. You could also try just doing spot baths with water instead of a full up sudsing (depending on how dirty he actually is). My dogs get filthy in the yard, but typically when the dust dries I can just brush it off of them vs bathing.

Supplementing his diet with omega 3s and 6s (fish oil) will also promote good coat health.

Thanks blackrose, I'll look into getting some fish oil and adding that to his food. Sometimes we're able to get away with just brushing him off, but between playing with our son's doberman (who slobbers all over him), and his propensity for getting as grimy as possible, it amazes me just how dirty he manages to get and stay. He's a hot mess!! :lol-sign:

You can dilute shampoo, too. I put about 8ish ounces of shampoo in a milk jug and fill the rest with water. I bathe my dogs once a week to every other day, and diluted shampoo + conditioner makes it a non issue.
