Me and my husband own a 1 year old labrador, and we have very different ideas about how much exercise it needs. His 2 km walks (the dog is off leash for half of it) are wayy too short in my opinion, and I feel like the dog need more exercise. Ive asked this question at a norwegian dog forum Im on, and everyone there agrees with me in this. He however seem to think us norwegians are a bit hysterical with our dogs (hes english icon_lol.gif proud bastards hehe), and that american and english dog owners are more sensible, so, in the name of science I thought Id ask you guys here

So whats your opinion; is a 2 km walk a day enough for a labrador?

(To clarify, I do ofc walk the dog too, we take turns, and when I do the walks are much longer. So the dog does get some exercise, but I still dont feel like its enough, in total)

There is no absolute concrete answer to this as it depends on your Labradors age, his overall health and even his genetics as a Labrador.

Each Labrador is a high energy working breed, initially bred for very physically demanding work.

However, a normally healthy adult Labrador needs one hour of exercise every day include walking.

Two km is just over one mile, and I don't think that's enough exercise either. My little dogs walk about 3 miles a day, not all at once but on 3 different walks the total is about 3 miles, plus they like to play fetch and chase each other- which also counts as exercise. Labs are high energy dogs and can turn destructive with built up energy.

I think each dog is different. My first lab liked to play but didn't need lots of exercise. My lab now is old but still full of life and acts like a puppy so needs lots of exercise. Even playing with your dog at home with a ball will help get out some of the energy.

2km isn't a very far distance, but it depends on a few things. If the dog is off leash, running a bit, zig zagging back and forth through woods or hilly Meadow, it's a bit different than a 2km walk on a sidewalk.

Labs need quite a bit of exercise, but it still varies greatly in the breed. If he's stir crazy when you get home, or rests for a bit but then becomes destructive or anxious, it's not enough.

A very rough guideline for me for a moderate energy lab would be those walks, combined with more intense exercise 2-3x a week (swimming, a longer hike, time at the dog park, biking or jogging, fetch), plus shorter periods of mental + physical exercise (training sessions, chewing a Kong, running around the backyard, potty break walks, car rides, etc)
