I ask because Orson can't catch to save his life! Not.even.joking.

This is his four pronged attack ......

Me:
Toss toy/treat

Orson:
1. Sit with blank look on face blinking as object gets closer.
2. Object smacks into face.
3. Go find where object landed.
4. Eat food/play with object.

Once in a while he'll open his mouth, but I'm tellling you even if the object hits him squarely on the tongue he manages to NOT catch it! :rofl1: I find myself treating him like a toddler learning to play baseball. I use the softest under handed tosses I can do and STILL nothing! LOL

Now Phoebe was a different story. You were hard pressed to get something passed her..........she was a catching machine! Even in her later years when her eyes starting getting milky, she never missed a beat. If she had landed in a sporting home, she could have been onehelluva frisbee dog or something along those lines.

Family dogs growing up usually had varied skills from ok to good, but Orson's total lack of skill in this area is not only comical, I also find it sweet and something that makes him stand out in all the pets I've lived with.

So where does your dog rate on this?

LOL Poor boy. It's hard with that narrow mouth!

Mine are pretty good, it's a learn to catch or miss out thing I think. Shamoo is a killer vacuum cleaner.

Kim is pretty good with food or toys as long as she has warning. If you toss something at her without telling her first she is mortally offended by your attempt to kill her. Though if it's food she'll snatch it up and eat it before telling you how very offended she is.

Webster is like a ninja when it comes to food tosses yet epically fails at catching toys, though he will jump for them. He often tries to cath toys with his paws and seeing how they are paws this usually doesn work. But food...no matter how bad the toss or small the morsel, food rately hits the ground around Web.

Mira can and will move heaven and earth to catch a toy. On the rare occasion she misses, she throws herself after it with such reckless abandon that she will often still nab it before it hits the ground. With fold she's about 50/50 -- about half the time she will let it fall then eat it, especially if the other dogs aren't around or she's not sure what sort of food I'm chucking at her. She rarely misses meat or cheese, though. Veggies she prefers to inspect.

Frodo is amazing at catching food. Amazing.

If he would just put his amazing abilities to work and start catching toys/balls/frisbees and bringing them back to me, I would be the happiest person on earth.

Bailey's pretty good at catching things. Buzz... can't catch anything to save his life! Sometimes I can get a piece of food in his open mouth and he thinks that's just amazing! :)

Both of my girls catch everything. EVERYTHING. I could be tossing a pair of socks to my husband and a little merle monster will jump out of nowhere and grab it.

Tucker is pretty good, we've actually spend time practicing with both food and his ball. He really like ball catching practice. It's just SO much easier to toss him treat while walking so I don't have to keep stopping and bending over.

Gipsy was pretty great at catching food. No food would get by her. She had a great reaction too. Like if something fell unexpected, she'd catch it.

Murphy is okay at catching food. He got a lot better after we got Mu and he realized that Mu would snarf his treats when he missed. Toys and balls are a no go. He won't even try to catch them - I've hit him in the face while throwing things for Mu.

Mu can catch anything. She's got ridiculous eye mouth coordination.

Tipper...has gotten a lot better? Lol. I've seen her pop her jaws three times before a ball/treat even gets to her mouth and she STILL doesn't catch it. She's gotten a lot better with most treats (except popcorn...the floating motion confuses her and it mostly bounces off her face).

All of mine can catch, really well actually! Piper I guess is my worst, but most of the time she's good at it. Actually, awhile back I took them all out front and took pictures of them catching stuff:

Wilson is my crazy dog with catching.. he contorts his body in ways I never knew was possible in order to catch stuff. I have to be careful with him because he does NOT think before he does stuff and I swear he's going to break his neck/back/leg/something!

Macky's an ace. She has like a 98% catch rate, and manages to do it without expending more energy than necessary.

Keeva... I used to think she couldn't catch! I guess she just didn't get it. Now she's pretty good too. She's so short, though, that certain angles/tosses are hard for her. Still, she's pretty good and getting better all the time.

Blossom... She has amazingly fast reflexes and just awful coordination at this point in her life - LOL. We have to be really careful with the ball because she'll attempt a catch at all costs, and I don't want her to blow an ACL or something. So um... her catches are either really awesome, or appalling and slightly dangerous. One time she jumped for her ball, missed, but managed to bounce it back straight into my nose.

Ouch.

Harlow is pretty good, and usually does like, a half flip thing in order to catch said object.

Rider looks at me as if I have just done the most horrific thing on the planet if I toss a toy at him. Food he's cool with, but he doesn't catch. It just falls on the floor and then is eaten.

Daisy used to be really good, then she got old & weird, and now she'll hold her mouth open & swing her head around while you're still clearly holding the treat. Ill have to get a video, it's hilarious.

Rage will catch anything, she's much like Sara's Merle girls - don't throw a pair of socks in this house unless you can count on the other person to get them.

Liz just... doesn't really catch. Ill occasionally throw something from close by & she'll grab it. Liz spends most of her time asleep.

Keena catches really well, too.

Journey can't catch at the moment if her life depended on it haha. But, none of my current dogs were good catchers either at her age.

Dance is an awesome catcher. Food, toys, whatever, she rarely misses. Ripley is pretty good at catching food, and sometimes toys are hit or miss, but mostly he has a good success rate. Keira can catch food but she can't be bothered with toys most of the time.

Rumor can catch food, she just chooses not to. If she thinks she'll miss out on whatever's being thrown by not catching it, she'll snag it. If there's no threat nearby, she just sits there and stares blankly while waiting for it to hit the floor. The latter makes her look like an idiot. -_-
