I have two hounds. Uncle Fred is a Treeing Walker Coonhound. He was abused and malnourished as a pup. Who could have known that only four months later he would be such an all around terrific dog.

Minnifred (Minnie) is our beagle to match. Theyu are great buddies, to us and to each other. Lets see if I can get these pics from photobucket onto this site. I've never done it before.

I realize on the pics I posted you can see the scars on Uncle Fred's neck where his former owner let puppy collars frow into his neck twice. Once is bad enough, but twice? You can see he is still very lean, but he now weighs 65 lbs. When I picked him up Dec 2, he weighed in at 42. He also has chain scars on his rump and the end of his tail is gone. He had roundworms, whipworms, tape worms, ear mites, giardia, and, incredibly, amebic dysentary. Thank God, no heartworm. He spent two days quivering against the front door. Now he goes to the dog park twice a day, has play dates, and is the joyous mascot of our block.

He and Minnie wrestle all over the house.

FIrst things i thought was what happened to his neck, i sure hope it isn't..that breaks my heart. Good for you for rescue and giving such a happy home (you can tell from one look at that face)! Welcome to CHazhound. I will be looking forward to your posts and pics. Nice looking family too!

Thanks everyone. We are lucky to have found him too. Uncle Fred is amazing. We love Minnie too. She is a recent addition. Someone we met at the dog park got her from a kill shelter as a companion for her Boston Terrier. She is too rough and it didn't work out. She was being left alone for 10-12 hours a day, and was destructive. The woman didn't want to return her to the kill shelter, and because of the amazing resemblance offered her to me.

She is great with the kids, friendly and sweet, and a heathen hellion in the house. I think she's about eleven months old and Uncle Fred loves her, so it anyone knows how to civilize a beagle who has no training at all, advice would be appreciated. We crate her when we go out, and watch her when we are home, so it could be worse. We crate her at night too, and we are never gone more than two hours at a stretch, so it isn't too bad.

What also helps is that she is getting enough exersize to keep a coonhound in shape, so most of the time she is a pretty tired Beagle. But she is amazingly creative about stealing things, especially food.

oh--beagles will eat everything and anything they can get! Be diligent about keeping things out of her reach--you may want to start teaching her the "leave it" command--so if you are not right with her, you can get her to release something she shouldn't have. Have you done any formal training with either dog? If not, I would suggest finding a basic obedience class--take your kids along too--since it is a great learning experience for them, and you probably want them to be able to handle the dogs without too many worries!

We've had Minnie two weeks and one day. So no class yet. So far she has learned her name. That good dogs get out of the back door of the car when I say, not leap over peoplke into the street, and sit. She seems very bright.

Welcome to Chazhound! Thanks for sharing the pics, they're beautiful. I love beagles . . . Kudos to you for helping out Fred! I wondered if that's what happened to his neck, and I'm sorry to read that I was correct. It sounds like they have a very good home with you, and I'm glad you can share them with us!
Feel free to post in the training or general area if you want some advice/help on training your beagle -- I'm sure you'll get good, quick advice! I've had experience fostering a couple rowdy beagles, so you can always feel free to PM me if you want.
