My dog who is partly doberman and mixed german shepherd has hookworms. I found out, by her vet few days ago, she just had her shots, was discovered to have hookworms. Mino is taking medication for it, just finished all of it by today. Im worried will she get it back again, those hookworms? Anyone know about those, I appreciate any info and help me understand to know those and how to prevent it from coming back again. We live out in country and only closest animals are cats by neighbor. Could she have picked hookworms from cats?? I love Mino so much and want the possible good health she gets. Thank you so much. This is wonderful website, and I love all the animals and pics in here. I applaud for all those animal lovers out there, loving those cute creatures.

Clean up any and all feces from your yard and make sure your dogs does not eat it's own stool. Hookworms are a more serious type of parasite. Take a stool sample back to your vet in a few months to make sure she does not get re-infected. I would worm your dog every 6 months with Safeguard dewormer that you can buy over-the-counter. It is very safe and I sware by it. It kills roundworm,hookworm,whipworm, and tapeworms. I think the product is great, you just mix it for 3 days in a row with your dogs food. It's much cheaper than going to the vet and it is the exact same product we used to sell at the vet clinic I worked for. It will not harm your dog if your dog does not have worms at the time you give it. It is also sold under the name Panacur or fenbendazole. Here is a link to one of the places that sells the product.

Thank you very much. I do clean up the yard, every three days. But I wonder if she could have picked that up from cats?? We live out in the country. I ll make sure to get the panacur from pet store every six months for Mino. Is there other way she could have picked hookworms from else where or something else?? Very much appreciated this. In order for them to not get into the soil, you need to clean up the yard immediatley after your dogs goes, at least for a while. I know it is a pain, but once they get in the soil, your dog just keeps getting re-infected by chewing sticks, licking something on the ground, or eating feces (yuck

My old Lab had them, even after getting wormed. They made him very "laid back" and he had terrible "garbage can breath". Once they are gone, they usually don't come back, if you clean up well, unless the pup has a medical problem. My Lab went from laid back to insane in about 3 days. I picked him due to him being laid back compared to his brothers, who were crazy, and it turned out he was just weak from the worms.
