Pap or Chi?

Nikon Coolpix pictures by katiemay01 - Photobucket

I honestly am stumped by this guy! His body and head shape and coat say papillon to me, but his color is blue brindle particolored by the looks of it. That definitely doesn't happen in papillons, but if he was sable then blue does very rarely happen in papillons. So... way way out of standard chihuahua? Papillon? Mix of one or both? Sable or brindle?:lol-sign:

ETA: He was adopted from a shelter as a 'chihuahua' but that doesn't mean much past the obvious fact that he's small.

75% pap, 25% chi? His body/head are definitely more so pap than chi... chis should be more blocky and have more of a domed shaped head.

He's a cutie. He looks blue brindled to me. lol.

I'd say papillon totally if it weren't for the color! I know brindle isn't possible in papillons but I don't know how exactly brindle works genetically. Anyone know much about brindling?

The more I look the more brindle he seems. He looked sable to me at first but in some of the pictures he seems pretty striped.

Grammy a well bred pap and a well bred chi should be easy to tell apart. It's when bad breeders start mass producing the breeds you see inbetweeners. lol I've seen a few dogs I honestly couldn't tell which breed they were because their features sat squarely in between the two (or pap and pom or chi and pom). But a well bred pap should be very distinct from a well bred chi from a well bred pom, etc.

To me this one looks like a pap but for the colors.

ETA: Can't help but wonder if he is a 'Chion'. Apparently it's an up and coming designer cross.

I'd say either a really off LH Chi, or a Chi/Pap mix. I've met some chis that I swear to God were Italian Greyhounds, but the people who had them swore up and down that they were papered Chis, so there are some funky looking ones out there.

I would venture to guess a pap/chi mix. I can't decide on the color lol. He does look like there's some brindling, especially on the head. But it could be an odd pattern of how the sable just happens to fall.

And of course there's a chance he's a chimera. That could potentially make a brindle pap. That's how at least several horses are brindle...it's a possibility that all brindle horses are chimeras. Why not a pap?

My aunt has an AKC registered chihuahua who besides being a different color looks exactly like that. He is 12 lbs and looks and acts nothing like a chihuahua. He was given to her but the previous owners paid over $1000 for this "purebred" chihuahua. My two chihuahuas are perfect specimens compared to her AKC boy and neither of mine cost anywhere near that much.
