I got a new english bulldog. I got him mostly because he has great pedigree, and both his father and grandfather were champions, so he seemed to be in great health and looked GREAT.

Only thing is, he is a bit older than 5 months. But from day one, he is great (this is my second day with him). He loves to be petted, loves to snuggle and lick and play around. Just great puppy in every way.

Only little problem:

I love playing little tug of wars with my dogs, and he does not like to bite on anything lol. He never really bites anything. I don't know if this is from training from his previous owner (he is 5 and a half months old), but how do I get him to be a bit more liberal for biting on a sock, or whatever. I know that only 2 days might be short, but he just refuses to bite anything.

Ofcourse, I don't want to pressure him into anything, just wondering how do I get him to bite on something, so I can play with him in other ways other than petting and snuggling?

THANKS A LOT,

Mat.

A puppy that comes with bite inhibition is a GODSEND!

However, playing tug and such, also teaches good bite inhibition. What kind of tugs are you using? Try a softer, fleece tug toy (there's a bunch at Petsmart/Petco). Will he bite into stuffies? You can play with stuffies, with him. You can teach him to fetch a ball. You can teach him tricks. You can hide treats and teach him to find them. There are lots of games you can play with your pup, if he's reluctant to play tug. : )

Take into consideration that he is still settling into his new house. I got my dog when he was 4-5 months old. For the first week or so, he wouldn't really play with toys and he didn't start to play tug for a month or so. The toy that got Django started on tug was a stuffed animal with a bungee inside so it had some give.

I personally wouldn't use a sock as a toy, not unless you want ALL your socks destroyed.

I agree about the socks. I'd also suggest getting plush toys that have squeakers, dogs love the squeakers! I agree that he'll probably just have to settle in, but also some dogs just don't like toys, some dogs don't like playing tug. My dog loves tug, but only occasionally. Once or twice a month she'll get in the mood, but besides that she doesn't really care.

I've had my puppy since Wed. and I can't get her to play yet either. I have several stuffed toys, really soft and one squeeks....She's 13 weeks old. I also bought her a dental bone because I caught her trying to chew on the kitchen chair leg! She hasn't taken an interest in that yet either.

She has gently placed her teeth on my fingers and each time I yell oww and pull away..so I'm hoping she will get the picture soon :)

I let my dogs have their tug of war games ..... so never played that way with a pup . One toy mine loved was a plastic gallon jug ... with a rope attached to handle .

Thx for the help guys. My dog is doing just great now (little monster, going nuts around the house, more energy than I expected). Yea, he loves biting, although he never bits me too hard. He's also playing tug of war with me now.

Hehe, what I love the most is when I come home back from University and call him. he gets soooooo excited to see me, does not control himself, jumps in the air, and lands on his back... It's hilarious. Then he shakes around so I pet him.

You sound like you have a cutie on your hands. I'd love to see a pic of him.

BMA_MAT,

Have you tried pulling guard and Armbar?

I mean I thought you must've, but since your dog isn't a 4 stripe brown maybe you didn't..
