The past three and a half weeks my husband has been away at reserves and our Shadow got very sick. He has kidney problems and was showing signs of going into renal failure. His hair fell out, he had trouble peeing and his coat got dry and scally. I was so afraid we were going to lose him, but a few days after my husband came home, he started playing again with his brothers and his skin started to clear up. Is there anthing that you can give a dog for stress? I once asked the vet, joking, if they made a puppy prozak, but now I am seriously wondering if there is such a thing for dogs. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

There IS such a thing! But I'm afraid to say I don't know enough about it to give advise. Why is your dog so connected to your husband and not you? Your dog obviously has a connection with him and not you. Is there anyway to develop a bond with your dog (between you and the dog) that can be shared while he is away?

Actually Shadow is very conected to both of us, when we first got him, we couldn't leave him alone for even an hour without him pulling out his own hair. So on the advice of our vet and groomer, we got another dog, now we have four. Shadow has always been a highly stressed out dog, but lately since his kidneys are getting worse, I am afraid so is his stress level. I wish I could take off work when my husband goes away, but I can't so when we aren't home he gets worried and then he gets sick. Our other dogs had a little trouble at first when my husband would go away and I had to go to work, but they have gotten used to it now. I have thought about getting a dogsitter to stay at the house to see if that would help, but in our area there aren't any, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

BronKi and i had a special bond, he loved everyone in the family but we had a special connection that i have been blessed to have had a few times before in my life. I don't know what you can do but go to your vet. I know there are antidepressents for dogs now, but with the uti problem that might cause complications. I am so sorry for you and your dogs worries. I was lucky that Bronki and i never had to be seperated for longer than two days in all our years together. Let us know if you find something that helps.
