most of you know, unless it's very cold...my dogs sleep outside. Now, I know there are lots of opinions on that. But, when the temps really fall as they did last night (to zero)...they have to stay in. They're good indoors all afternoon, but usually it's Addie that refuses to stay put after 8PM. Last night, Hammie decided to not sleep at all. We had a plan...Dave and Addie slept in the downstairs bedroom......Ham and I would sleep ustairs. Our upstairs bedroom is a loft...completely open to the room below by a half wall, so I don't have a door to shut. Sir Ham decided to pace downstairs ALL NIGHT LONG. By 3AM, I realized how much I stink at trimming nails.........if I hear that 'clicking' again I'll freak out. Also....why did I ever leave old licenses hang on his collar????? Jingle....jingle....jingle....click...click...click. UGH. Sir Ham also wanted to drink water all night long.......and I don't like heat, so the temp in here is usually around 60......what's up with that??? It was like he was in the desert. Two trips out....at 11 and 1, only to want to linger and eat snow....AFTER drinking bowl and bowl of water. Now he has the nerve to be snoring............................ever want to just bop your dog over the head with a pillow???? Addie, however, slept like a baby and is now wanting to play.......................no sleep for me. New game plan for next winter on the ole homestead....a small heated building, divided for peace. And...that's my vent for today. LOL Looks like by the end of the week, I'm gonna be one tired puppy. Any ideas for me??? We don't have a basement, and the laundryroom is the cat's domain when the dogs are in (which of course stressed her, so she is paying me back by depositing hair balls everywhere) Dave played with both dogs prior to bedtime........we THOUGHT we tired them out. hmmmmm....I'm pretty whiney when I've been awake all night....time for strong coffee.

WAKE SIR HAMMIE UP! Keep him awake for a good part of the day. He's used to guarding at night when he's outside evidently. Addie should be more than happy to accomodate you by tormenting him.

Tonight take the water up after 9:00 p.m. or so. And make sure the lid is down on the toilet - lol! Take that collar off before you go to bed, too. You can leave it on the doorknob so you can pop it back on him if he absolutely must go out.

Now you know why Addie snarks at him!

LOL Renee...that was my thought exactly...'now I know why Addie gets so mad!!' It's the water problem that seems to keep him awake..even after drinking, he makes these smacking noises like as if he has such a dry mouth. Forgot to mention the really fun part....when I would just start to drift off to sleep, he would jump up on the bed and PLOP down with half of his weight on my body. The first time he did that, I thought he broke my back. Meanwhile...Dave was sleeping happlily with Addie on the floor beside him. I also now think he missed Addie.......no wonder she slept so well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as keeping him awake, Dave likes to call him 'Portland'...........he's a bag of cement that I can't move.

One of my tricks for waking mine up is knocking on the door. Gets 'em so awake they can't go back to sleep for awhile. Another thing that works is whispering to one of the other dogs. They're so afraid they might miss something! lol

Or I can just go to the 'fridge and rattle the cookie bag on top of it. . .

LMAO to the both of you! Both my dogs are indoor dogs but usually they will sleep downstairs or find one of my girls beds to sleep on, well on in Sadie's case and under in Nora's case (she still can't make jumping on the bed ... she's sooo cute huff'n and puff'n trying though )

We will usually shut our bedroom door because I never get a good night's sleep with Sadie with us. Jump off the bed, walk around the bed, pound pound pound (she's such a pound walker), scratch her ears, jingle, jingle, jingle (licenses ) shake shake shake, pound pound pound, jump on the bed, get situated, roll on back, kick me with her back legs, snort and proceed to snore. She is soooo not like a lady. I love her to death, but she's no sleepover candidate

Gotta admit it's rare that ours keep us awake. It's usually the coyotes that get me. Or someone else's dogs running around baying in the woods on our front pasture. I hear that then I get worried that the coyotes will get the dog . . . We've got a bunch of people moving onto property around us, letting their dogs run loose all night "because they're in the country now" yeesh, what idiots! I've told Charley we may have to put in a pig parlor on the bottom of the property (where we can't smell it) to run everyone off!

Bimmer sleeps on his big fluffy rug at the foot of the bed and Shiva and Kharma usually crash on the sofa. Once in awhile they'll come in and sleep in the bedroom, but the sofa's so much more comfy Every now and then they do wake me up, rummaging around on the kitchen counters looking for snacks - or possibly a field mouse that's foolishly decided to move indoors.
Of course, now that I've said this, Shiva will come in tonight and put her big head on the side of the bed and sigh in Charley's face until he wakes up, or Kharma will come to the foot of the bed and bite my toes through the blankets until I wake up. . .

lol, that reminded me of when we had my brother's dog (rottie/shephard mix), Taz, for a couple of months while he was in the middle of living in an apartment and securing the purchase of his home. We weren't used of LARGE dogs and Taz would come into our bedroom and rest his head on my side of the bed and huff in my face also. I can laugh at it now! My brother still owes me big time for those couple of months! Actually he was a doll and a pleasure

We didn't have Nora at the time. But I remember Taz and Sadie chasing our poor cat under my daughter's bed. I went running up the stairs to repremand them both, went into the room and all I could see was the both of their butts sticking out from under the bed, back legs standing up and tails bobbing franticly. Side by side... what a sight. I almost choked on my laughter!

Blondie sleeps inside, we close his door so that he doesn't wander around the house all night, provoking chaos. But he sleeps well, doesn't bark or anything... Not even on New Year's when fireworks went off at midnight around the neighborhood.

My dogs decide to be nocturnal during the summer. Its sooo hot during the day that when they play outside, they fall asleep. Its nice and cool on the inside, so they fall asleep. Than at night, its still pretty hot but the sun isnt beaming on them so they always go into the pool and swim around. The rest of their night is spent seeing how many times they can run into the house soaking wet and dry off on my bed sheets.

I think the weather is pretty nice during the winter so the dogs normally play all day and sleep at night.
