Wanna have some fun? I've just launched a survey/contest on our blog to guess what breeds will come back from Opie's DNA test. If you'd like to make a guess, visit our blog (www.dogsayeview.blogspot.com) before we get the test results back in 4-6 weeks (around May 1, 2007).

Thanks!

Guess What Breed Opie Is...

Hi -
Don't forget to enter your guess on the blog to enter the contest! www.dogsayeview.blogspot.com.

I'm not sure how the breed test works, either. The way they explained it, they don't have to know the parents. Just like a DNA test can tell if somebody's gender, race, etc. without comparing to their parent's sample... the breed test works the same way. They tested thousands of "purebreed" dogs and identified the genes that make a lab a lab and a golden a golden, for example. They've "verified" 38 breeds.

If Opie includes any of those 38 breeds, they'll show up in the test as either primary (prevalent) or secondary (obsure), depending on some measure of amount. If he's one of the other 110 or so breeds... we won't know.

I'm doing this as much for fun as for anything else. Not like I'm going to turn him back in after six years because he's the wrong breed!

Doggie DNA Test

Hi KrazyLime! Thanks for stopping by!

It's called the Canine Heritage Test by MMI Genomics. The company does all kinds of animal DNA tests - they are best known for verifying the parentage/lineage of thorobred horses and champion dogs.

There's lots of info and links on this post on my blog: http://dogsayeview.blogspot.com/2007/03/doggie-dna-test.html. Or, you can go to the company's web site at http://www.metamorphixinc.com/products2a.html.

I thought it would be fun to see if they can say what breeds are in Opie, since the vets I've been to don't know for sure.
