The day I have dreading for almost eighteen years had arrived. Ever since I had Apollo, I knew the day would come when I would have to make a decision. The time had come. Apollo was in ill health. I had taking to the veterinarian for treatment of her bad hip. There were times where it prevented her from getting up off of the floor. She also could not hold her bladder and sometimes she would urinate in my bed. It was evident that she was suffering, but I was in denial about it. I did not want to lose Apollo so I kept taking her to the veterinarian. Finally I put my feelings aside and decided to do the best thing for Apollo. I would put her to sleep. It was the hardest decision I ever made. I felt awful about it, but when I called the veterinarian and told of my intentions, he told me I was doing the right thing. That made me feel a little bit better.
One of Apollo's favorite foods was pizza, so her last night with me I ordered a pizza. I let her eat as much as she wanted. She still had her appetite and ate quite a bit. When I went to bed that night, I let Apollo sleep with me as usual and hoped the next day would never come.
I woke up and I still wondered if I was doing the right thing. With Apollo in my car, I went to a friend of mine's house. I asked him if I was doing the right thing. He suggested that I get a second opinion. But then I decided I was doing the right thing.
It was time to take Apollo to the veterinarian. Apollo was afraid of going to the veterinarian's office. She would always shake with fear. It was important to me that Apollo's last memory would not be at the veternarian's office so I got a sleeping pill from the veterinarian and gave it to Apollo before we left. I waited for the pill to take effect and when it did, I put Apollo in my car. My grandmother tearfully called out, Goodbye Apollo. As we drove to the veterinarian's office, the tears began to flow. They continued when we arrived. I carried Apollo into the office an assistant led me into the waiting room. The veterinarian came in and assured me I was doing the right thing. He pulled out a syringe and injected Apollo with it. I held Apollo's paw the entire time. Finally it was over. Apollo was gone. Theveterinarian again offered his condolences. I gave Apollo one last kiss and left the room. I then made arrangements to have Apollo cremated and have her ashes in an urn.
I lost my best friend that day. But Apollo went out with a bang. On our way to the veterinarian's office, Apollo urinated in my car. At the veterinarian's office, she urinated on my leg.
