My Golden Retriever, Suzy, has just got her NutriScan results back and I need to find a food that doesn't contain any allergens. Her results show that she is allergic to beef, venison, whitefish, eggs, lentils, milk, barley, salmon, quinoa, sweet potato, lamb, turkey, duck, millet, rabbit, potato and peanuts. She was eating Taste of the Wild High Prairie Dry Dog Food, which contains lamb, sweet potatoes, potatoes, eggs, beef and venison! Now I know what her problem was all along. I thought that grain-free meant allergy-free, but that is very much not the truth. She is miserable. Suzy always has dirty ears, licks her feet, scratches and scoots. Now I know for sure it's her food. I need a recommendation for a dry dog food that is free from any of her food allergens. Please don't suggest raw. My friend's dog ate raw and ended up getting salmonella poisoning and going into kidney failure. It must be a dry dog food, free from the allergens I mentioned. She is fine with soy, oatmeal, rice, corn, chicken, pork and wheat. I appreciate any suggestions for a dry food that is Suzy allergen-free! :lol-sign:

Hmm. She's not allergic to rice, so that's good. Same with corn. And chicken.

So, honestly, I'd be looking for a chicken and rice food.

California Natural makes a chicken/rice limited ingredient food.

Chicken Meal, Brown rice, White rice, Sunflower Oil, Flaxseed
So long as she can have Flaxseed and Sunflower Oil, that may be an option.

I also wouldn't rule out "lower quality" foods (aka, not corn/wheat/soy free), because she is obviously able to handle those better than things that many people consider "high quality" (things that are not corn/wheat/soy). The issue with that is since she is allergic to so many protein sources, you'll need to comb the labels to make sure that there aren't any unnamed meats ("poultry meal" could be turkey/duck/chicken/what have you), fish oil, etc.

Looks like Nutro Natural Choice has a Chicken/Rice/Oatmeal food that doesn't have any of her allergens at first glance, unless she is allergic to pea protien: Clicky clicky

Avoderm has a formula, too...it does have herring meal and kelp meal in it, though? Click me, too

Those were just the first two that I came across on a search on that website for "chicken and rice" foods. So, there are definitely foods out there that she can have! Just look at the ingredient label and choose carefully!

There are also prescription diets that have hydrolyzed protein sources specifically for dogs with allergies, so that may always be an option. Just keep in mind that sometimes when first switching to a food that contains no allergens, some dogs do develop an intolerance for it and it will need to be your "sacrificial" food. So always have a back up food in mind!

I was surprised at how many allergies she has. But, she has no problem with rice. No problem with corn. Chicken is fine.

Chicken and rice would probably be a great food for her. The California Natural Chicken Meal & Rice Formula looks great! I ordered a bag from Chewy. I love how it has a Golden Retriever on it, too!

The allergen test didn’t test for flaxseed of sunflower oil, but I assume they aren’t major allergens in dogs. So-called “lower quality†foods might actually be better for Suzy. But, I know I’m going to have to go over ingredients with a fine toothcomb. I don’t think she has an allergy to peas. I ended up ordering a 15-pound bag of AvoDerm Natural Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Formula Adult Dry Dog Food, a 15-lb bag of Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Adult Chicken, Whole Brown Rice & Oatmeal Formula Dry Dog Food, and a 15-lb bag of California Natural Chicken Meal & Rice Formula Adult Dry Dog Food. I assume she doesn’t have a problem with herring or kelp. Although, those weren’t on the test.

I appreciate you looking! I’m going to give those three a try and see which one she tolerates best. I was having a very hard time, as I was looking at brands like Taste of the Wild and Orijen.

If she doesn’t tolerate these foods, I will look into getting her on a prescription diet. Since Nutro is the most expensive, I think I’ll use that as my sacrificial food. The California Natural and the AvoDerm will be my backups!
