Southpaw, that's awesome! I'll have to try it! My mom was a hairdresser/beautician when I was growing up, and she's always told me that if I scrunched my hair, it would be curly, but I don't really know how or what products to use. I'll have to look into it! I don't have the products you mentioned, but I have leave in conditioner and gel. Quick question though, does the gel make your hair "crunchy"? I hate that feeling, and really prefer to leave product out of my hair in general for that reason. I'll have to do a before/after shot of me with scrunched hair and a before/after shot of me with those heat-less curlers I posted about earlier.

Dogdragoness, it is great for your hair to sleep in a braid. It keeps your hair from tangling so you don't have to brush it as often or as harshly and it keeps it from breaking/getting pulled out. I sleep with a braid sometimes but I'm really tender headed and it gives me a headache sometimes. I really want to get a silk pillow case because I thing that will help a lot.

If you find hte right gel and dont use too much your hair will not be crunchy.

When I mentioned twists earlier, I meant super basic like out of the shower work some leave in conditioner in (I very seldom use gel actually) and then take BIG sections and just gently twist. Let air dry and then shake out. My hair takes forever to dry so I just do that for the first bit while I am getting ready otherwise etc. I often go out with wet hair but I always have

Yeah I've done those before! I used to do it all the time when I was younger, and I loved it, but for some reason stopped doing it.

Well, I style my hair at night so I prefer a little bit of a crunchy cast, holds my hair together better while I sleep, but my tossing and turning means that the crunch is gone when I get up in the morning. :p Using less gel will make it less crunchy, or some gels just leave more of a crunch than others... or you can "scrunch out the crunch" once your hair dries. You could use mousse instead of gel too, those will give more of a lighter hold and aren't usually so crunchy. It's a lot of experimenting!

ahhhhhh whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

this was so much easier when we were just pen pals.
Fack.
My husband spent 5 years in the usmc, but we met before he enlisted. And from what I can tell you, be caaaaareful. Underlined, bolded, the whole 9 yards. I don't want to stereotype all single Marines, but holy heck, could I tells you stories about Marines my husband served with. Lots of stories. About lots of different men.

Couldn't find gel, so I used leave in conditioner and mousse. It was a fail. :( the underneath got super curly and the top was basically flat with a couple small waves toward the front. However I DID brush it out when I got out of the shower. But I kind of have to or my hair will be super tangly. Should I brush it in the shower?

Yeah, get a wide toothed comb and comb out the tangles in the shower. One of my friends has super curly hair and that's what she does.

How pathetic is it that I looked at the photo and was like "Hmm what kind of braid is - GREEN LANTERN."

This is why I fail at being girly.

Omg I want to learn how to do that, that's awesome :)
Me too!!

Okay so after I showered and tried scrunching my hair and failed, I went swimming and then went to work without brushing it, and the underneath had TONS of spiral/ringlet curls! But the top was still meh. :( Whyyyy? I didn't use any product though, so I'm hoping that by adding the conditioner and mousse or gel it will help. I also think that the top layer of my hair got too dry before I tried scrunching it. I had it up in a towel for a bit before I tried scrunching it and THEN I brushed it out, THEN scrunched it. Next time I'm gonna brush it in the shower, and scrunch it right after I get out.

I got some pics of it after swimming that I'm gonna post in a bit.

I have the same problem - I have lots of curls on the bottom. The only way I've been able to fix it is by putting a small amount of gel in while my hair is super wet, scrunching, then piling it all on top of my head with a t shirt (there's a name for this method but I can't remember it). I usually end up with this.

I would try brushing it in shower, leaving a bit of conditioner in (or use a leave in) and then as soon as you get out work some gel and and twist some big sections to help shape. Let sit like that for a while and then fluff and scrunch a bit. Does that make sense?

Before if I just scrunched I got a mess of all different curls and patterns. If I let it set first a bit all together it seems to hold the same shape better.

My hair looks fine as long as I don't go outside for a while in the humidity ... Poof! I look like a poodle xD, so when I style it I use gel right now. Someone suggested bed head after party ... But golly me its a tad expensive!

Pantene's (spelling???) volume enhancing gel is pretty good because its weightless but still tames frizz. I have had probs with the products made for curly hair tend (at least for me) to leave residue
