Giant Schnauzer or Husky?

Ok I just read some more on Giant Schnauzer's and I still like them.

I read that they can have a strong prey drive, which is fine becuase we have no small animals and have a large yard that the doggy can run and play in. I have plenty of time and money to spend with a dog and like I said before I love to excercise. My parents are both very active people. I also read that they are pretty smart/stubborn dogs that almost always need proffessional training. This is also fine because I am willing to work with the dog I get and have the financials to get a personal trainer.
I also read about the barking. That they tend to bark "relentlessly" as the site put it. This is also fine because isn't there a way to train a dog to stop barking? I don't mind having a barking dog and it would probably for the best if they did bark because a gaurd dog is a good thing here in Ca. We have a large yard and our neighbors aren't really close so they shouldn't be able to hear it as much as if we were in an apartment.

Anything else I should be worried about when choosing a giant schnauzer?

Oh like I said my dad has had/owned many dogs in the past and both parents love dogs.

The biggest thing you have to do is get your parents on board. If they don't want one, it's moot.

I have already talked to my parents about this. Both of them like dogs and would be participating in the growth and training of the dog. My da just loves dogs, especially larger sized ones and is pretty good about training. But da said I could choose the breeds I think would suit us and then run it by my parents and they would decide what they like and think they could handle. I made a list of about 4 dog breeds I thought would work and ran it by my da and ma and they said these two breeds seem like the best choice, but can't decide between the two.
They said either breed is fine, but I need to decide which suits us best and then find a rescue or something to look for the right dog. We tried the shelter, but they never get a giant schnauzer and rarely a husky.

What about docking/cropping?
Are all the schnauzer's in rescues docked/cropped?

i think i would go ith the schnauzer, but I would look in the shelter for a dog you can really bond with. Puppies can be a handful and if you jog cureently a puppy probably couldnt keep up, so an older dog might be a better idea

I am looking into a rescue, but can't find one for giant schnauzer.

One thing to keep in mind, if you're in Southern California where it's warmer a Husky isn't going to be able to get out and run during the hot months. Even during the majority of the year it will be too warm unless you go early in the morning or after sundown.

if you get this book called 'your purebred puppy.a buyer's guide' by Michelle Welton,it will help you ALOT. heres the site i found out about it,check it out and read about the breeds that you are looking for. the book has info on 200 breeds.but its not just a description book,it has about 1/2 to a 1/3 of the book telling you about evaluating the puppys on offer,and its parents.how to tell a reputable breeder from a bad one.and lots lots more. btw i am not a promoter for this book trying to sell it.lol.it just happens to be amazon's best selling puppy book,which made me buy it once i found out about it.i would strongly recommend anyone to get this book. you can get it under $10.

First of all, it's GREAT that you're willing to get a rescue dog, that truly is one of the most rewarding things you can do!

I would definitely go with the shnauzer if I had to choose between the two. Huskies are notoriously hard to train, don't do great in hot weather, and are much more independent than many breeds. If you want a companion, I'd definitely go with the schnauzer.

Good luck with finding a doggy! Another thing about Gaint Schnuazers is that they have a guarding instinct. Sorta like a GSD or a Dobe. So if you don't want a dog that will guard and will love everybody, don't get a Gaint Schnauzer.

yea i heard...from ur last post lol. i just found a rescue i guess andd thought it was a big deal, cuz before yesterday i didnt even know their was giant snauzers and i thought i knew every kind of dog,,, i guess i missed the giant snauzer part in the dog shows......i thought there was only miniature and standard and then i was thinking if i havent heard of it b4 maybe it isnt ckc registered,so a dog rescue on it would be a big deal but it is ckc so... i onno i guess i need to brush up on some stuff...

Try www.petfinder.com, you can find purebred rescue groups, shelter listings, and even private ads for specific breeds of dog. That's where I found my rescue GSD!
