Name: Apollo
Born on: April, 2004
Size: 80ish lbs and 26ish" at the withers
Coat: Red Sable
Lines: West German Working (out of Belgium)

This is/was Apollo. He was my first GSD. He passed away one year ago today, actually. Thought I'd share some of him.

Okay, I'll stop photo dumping now. I miss that boy.

That's the thing that has me not quite 100% excited. It's going to be a much larger dog than I'm used to. Maybe I'll get lucky and mine will be a shrimp, too :rofl1:
I'll ship you mine to live with for a month or two, anything will seen shrimpy after him :lol-sign:

Will you introduce me? Invite her here or tell me where to find her!
Sure thing! I'll find her username and shoot her a line, then PM you!

Name: Chance
Born on: Feb 2007
Size: 75 pounds and I am not sure how tall
Coat: Black and tan
Activities: Trying to grow the other half of his brain, not begging for food, being a snuggler. Oh and being a parvo survivor after being given a 15% chance of living. Hence: Chance.

Being a dork
It's CHANCE! I haven't seen that handsome dog for a long time!

He was such a gorgeous dog and he sounds like he was amazing to work with and be around. I love Apollo just through the photos and your descriptions of him <3

Roman is so lithe and lean (though still VERY clearly and distinctly masculine) that I always that of him as a smaller GSD. Wow!

Ohhh, I'll join with my uncle's girl!

Name: Bailey
Born on: August 13th, 2011 (so around 5 months).
Size: I think last weight was around 50lbs? Could be wrong though.
Coat: Black/tan, but mostly black...
Lines: No clue.
Activities: She loves to play fetch, she's gotten quite good at playing with Jackson, she loves to visit downtown Annapolis, and basically just be attached to my uncle all day.

Guys, I have a question about GSDs, since we're (well, you are, I'm not lucky enough to have my own GSD yet) mentioning lines. . .
I'm terrified of American show lines. When I get my GSD I'd have no idea where to look, though I've seen some amazing dogs from European working lines (and it looks like there are many in this thread). Thoughts? Should this be a new thread?

Best option is go to a Schutzhund club and meet the dogs. If you just want to cruise online, look through the WUSV (world schutzhund championships) results, USA championship results, google the names of the dogs involved, see if the are from breeders with websites.

Look at what the breeder is doing/producing, see where they are getting other dogs to add to the program, which breeder's dogs are in their dog's pedigrees, etc.

Look for dogs with progeny that are working as Police K9's, titling to high levels in Schutzhund, etc. Not that that route is the be-all end-all but it'll put you in the right direction vs just googling "working line gsd," though you can do that too.

Watch videos where ever possible, think about testing vs training... watch for decoys that push the dog hard. Bonus points if the dog knocks the decoy off his feet and lands on the dog and the dog doesn't care, or if the dog misses, and he has an instant rebound rate... basically, if you find videos of dogs performing well despite less-than-ideal conditions, that's in their favor.

There are a LOT of working line breeders out there. Working line dogs are not at all rare, there's a LOT to choose from and BYB's of them are definitely out there. Again, best is to just go to the closest Schutzhund club, meet & watch. Not everyone has a website... in fact people something could be said for breeders who have no use for the advertising a website provides :)

Great post, Xandra, thanks! I definitely prefer working lines over show lines, though I've seen some frightening dogs produced from working lines. I'm confident in dealing with a "hard" dog that isn't a dog for an inexperienced dog owner. Not so confident in handling with some unstable, off-the-wall police K9s I've met.
And I agree about websites. The breeder I'm (*crossing my fingers it works out*) getting my pup from doesn't have a website. Don't think they even have internet. :p

Eep, sorry for de-railing your thread.

Here's the German Shepherd I had, Crash. I'm not sure how old he'd be now, or what kind of lines he was from, but we got him from someone who was rehoming him. We went to meet him, and he was TOTAL nutcase. He was mean, bit my dad and made him bleed the first time we met him, lol! The poor thing was just undersocialized, abused, and ...a GSD puppy, lol! But we couldn't leave him there, we took a huge risk by adopting him the way he was, but when we witnessed the woman's son beating him with a stick, and throwing rocks at him, we couldn't leave him there. With tons of socialization, training, and LOVE, he became such an AWESOME dog. I loved him so much, and will absolutely own another GSD someday. I ADORE black GSDs.

Brittany - Bailey looks fantastic, and sounds like she and your uncle are doing incredibly well together!

Nope he's an oversized snake lol.

(one reason he is not creating any progeny lol)
:lol-sign: Trent is only a tiny bit smaller, he's around 26" - 27" and 82 lbs, though if he was as in shape as Roman is, the weight estimate might change.

No kidding! And um, When did Trent get so big?! I miss you guys! I always loved Trent!
I certainly missed seeing you around, too!! Stick around woman! :p

Have no idea when Trent grew up on me, he's going to be three next month

No problem, not derailing if it's about German Shepherds LOL

Feel free to shoot me a PM with your location if you're comfortable and I can see if I know of anyone in your area to contact.

Thanks! I've been so proud of them. I posted a thread about it a little while ago. http://chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147608

I showed him a picture of Trent and he thinks he's just gorgeous. I am beginning to like the darker colored (don't know the proper name for that) shepherds like Trent and Bailey.

This illustrates the size difference between the KnoxFox and a normal sized GSD.

Knox is not a genetic dwarf or anything, he just ended up really small. He's in proportion to himself.
