Hello, we've had our pup now nineteen days and even though I'm some what tired I am also very happy with our new Toby. He keeps us laughing and is very loving to all four of us.

I have a couple of questions....

1. We feed Toby his last meal no later than 6pm. For the most part, since we've had him, his poops have been very soft sometimes even runny (sorry for the graphic details) and very negatively fragrant; if you get my drift. Well, we've been hoping this would pass but no such luck. No hard stools with "normal" smells yet. Last night he had big stools - one at 2am and the other at 4:30 am. His last meal was at 6pm! Luckily he barks and lets us know he has to go out. But, wow, that's alot of poopies isn't it? We are not over feeding him we are following instructions on the bag according to weight. Is this normal? We are feeding him Nutro - Puppy Lamb and Rice. He also has many BM's during the day.

2. I saw some stuff for diarrhea at the pet store. Should I buy it there or do you think I should make an appointment to see the vet. I've already taken him to the vet the first day I got him and have had two separate stool tests that showed the same result and I am now giving him he typical yellow liquid stuff for deworming puppies. Call me frugal but I just don't want to spend the money for a consultation just to turn around and buy a similar product that I could have just bought at the pet store. Then again, I want to do what is best for Toby.

Silly, but I feel like a new mom all over again. What to do, what to do.

Is the yellow stuff pyrantel pamoate? That will rid the dog of hook and rounds. It will not rid of tapes. And those are not seen in every bowel movement, but if you watch they can be seen with your eye in the stool.
It would look like a short, flat, worm with a wave like motion. But since you have had two fecals and It sounds like you are looking for something in the stool, I wouldn't worry to much about worms.
I think you should concentrate on looking at your dog food, and any treats you give. I have heard Nutro is not a great food, but I also am not familar with it. You should look and search in the dog food forum for threads that will give you info on great dog foods.....there are MANY!

Nutro isn't that good of a food at all, but it is better than a lot of other foods. The Dog Food forum has lots of helpful information. Our puppy had runny stools when we started on Wellness. We switched cold turkey to Canidae All Life Stages and things have been great ever since.

You may want to try boiled rice and chicken for a day to calm his stomach. If that doesn't firm up his stool, try changing the food or visiting your vet.

I would also consider taking a stool sample into the vet. Frequent poo's are normal for a puppy, but extended runny poo could be a problem. Things like coccidia and campylobactor are funny little things that can run differently for every dog, and should be considered when dogs have consistantly runny poo. It could be the food. Most good puppy foods I have seen keep their puppy formula to chicken and rice, as chicken is much easier to digest than lamb.

The yellow stuff is called Strongid -T; a dewormer.

Thanks to all for referring me to the Dog Food Forum! I had no idea. I'll be switching him over to a better brand now that I know better.

I'm taking him to the vets on Monday for his second set of shots, hopefully his stools will be harder by then and if not, I'll talk to the vet about it.

Glad you are looking at other foods!

strongid t is just a brand name....the active ingredient is pyrantel pamoate.
(just so you'll know)....there are many brands and most can be bought over the counter..


Edit: Just to give you a heads up..... Alot of vets do not know a good food when they see it! Alot of them reccommend science diet and other highly advertised foods... Just don't fall for it.
Your pup will be better off, by you learning about ingredients in the food, and following the wise nutrition advice offered here.

Just a comment about food. Because your puppy has been having runny stools for quite a time now, the vet may recommend an ID food (gentle on the stomach, good for intestinal illnesses which is a major cause of runny stools). IF your vet prescribes an ID food, TAKE IT. No, MediCal is not the best food out there, but if your dog is having a specific health issue that can be covered under MediCal's line of food, I recommend using it until the problem has cleared up.

Good foods - Innova, California Natural, Eagle Pack Wholistic Blends, Canidae, Solid Gold. There are more - lots more. This is just a sample listing.

when our puppy had soft stools that just would not go away the vet said Colitis. He thought it could have been from stress, or from the worms she did have worms a few weeks before then. He gave us a antibiotic, another wormer (pancur), and and anti-diarrhea med. Also she got the science diet I/D canned food. Literally the next day the poop was firm and was fine from then on.
