Well my puppy turned 8 weeks old on the 12th! YAY HAPPY 8 WEEKS IZZIE! Anyways :D besides that, I just had a question...
I live on military post housing, so they are very strict about picking up your doggie's business and all of that. Well I like to take walks in the evening and want to get her used to doing that with me. The problem is not that she's bad on the leash, she just doesn't want to go walk. Even down to the end of the block, especially if she hears a loud noise or another dog, she wont go any further. I just don't know how to console her so that she knows it's okay.

Also, how do I discipline her if she runs out of my little yard area. She did this earlier and once ran too close to the road and the other time into the neighbors garage. OYE, I just don't want to start this type of habit now.

Also, I finally got her a crate and she's been doing well sleeping in there. I was wondering though, I wake up with her once or twice a night, and she potties both times, but my question, if I keep taking her out at night will this encourage her to keep doing this forever, or will she eventually build up the tolerance to learn to not have to potty at night? This is my biggest fear is that even when she's oldeer, she'll still want to go out at night. Thanks so much <<33

Hi. your pup is very young so she will probably need to get up and potty at night until she can hold it longer. mine did for a couple weeks and then they were fine thru the night. As far as staying in the yard, the first thing I teach my dogs is to come when called, but i dont have a problem with any roads. Maybe you can get a long lead so you have more control. With walking I would just keep walking showing confidence and have some yummy treats to give.If she acts scared dont coddle, just act like all is fine. I would be very leery about taking her places until she has had her puppy shots though.Thats a hard one becouse you want to socialize, but dont want your pup to catch anything.Congrats on your new pup, What kind is she?

8 weeks is a bit young to expect her to be "good" on the leash. lol. Just keep working with her :D Talking to them really helps, Izzie good girl, come on, that's a girl, you know, stuff like that. If she comes across something scary, just "Izzie your fine! Let's go! come on!"

As for keeping her in the yard... I don't have a fenced in yard but my guys know to stay in..Now how did I do that??? LOL. Ah, she's still really young, so I'd make sure whenver you have her out that you keep a good eye on her or try to block off the road in some way. Calling her when she comes to close to the road, telling her no... I think that's all I really did. Whenever they approached the "limits" I just said "NO!" and pointed towards the yard (While telling them to come back)

As for her being able to "hold it", it will come with time. She's still very young, you can't expect her to have full bladder control until about 4 months.

Good luck:D

Congrats on your new pup!:)

It takes some time for them to become used to walking on a leash. You could try putting the leash on her in the house & just let her drag it around. Sometimes that tends to help a little. When you go out be very upbeat & happy and if necessary use some really special treats to lure her along until she gets comfortable. Do not comfort her when she is unsure. Be very matter of fact & continue on and eventually your confidence will flow down the leash and she will realize that if you aren't concerned she doesn't need to be either.

Once she has had all of her shots be sure to get her out and about in alot of different situations and expose her to all the things the world has to offer. Socialization with people & other dogs is important when they are young to help them become confident, happy & comfortable.

I have a different outlook on being off-leash. In my opinion since bad things can happen so quickly I don't believe in letting dogs be off-lead in an unfenced area until they have a very reliable recall. And that is not something that will happen for a long, long time. I would much rather err on the side of caution and curtail her freedom than experience the terrible sadness if she were to get hit by a car and injured or worse. As suggested in an earlier post you can pick up a 20-30 ft training lead which will give her a little more freedom.

The general guideline for puppies is that they can hold it for 1 hr for each month of their age plus 1. 2 months = 3 hrs. As she gets older you will see that she is sleeping longer. The main thing is when you do take her out to go make sure it is all business with no playing and right back into her crate when she is done.

Enjoy your pup and be sure to post plenty of pics!:)

You trained your dogs to stay in yard? I so want that for Tink, scrappy just gives us a look, and runs for the hills- we tried absolutely everything for years - training, come recall(works only if she knows we've got food) underground fence, she sat there contemplating for a few weeks, we watched her, then she learned that just one big leap, would = a second of ouch- then she'd be free to run around, when she came back, she'd sit outside the line, whining till we came and got her...
Even now, at 10, whenever she gets the inkling, she's gone! At least now that she's older, she comes back much quicker than she used to...so she's always on a line, no choice-she's a beagl-y mutt mix, don't know if beagles are runners...
I'd love to teach Tink something different though...

When we moved here , Bubba learned the " stay by me " in the front yard... Chip is beginning to learn it too. When working in the front yard , I used to have to tether him to a tree....yesterday , I had only a little weeding and planting to do, so I let him loose and when he started to go next door, I said .. Chip, stay by me .... he came back and layed under the tree where I used to tether. Good boy Chip !!

I think my guys just know because we walk them off leash soo much. Also of course they just got used to going in the front yard and what the "boundaries" were.

If something catches their nose and they start to wander I just say, "Hades! Get back here! Stay in the yard!" lol, they seem to understand. They've only taken off once and that was after a cat
