I ran out of frontline for my cat last month, but I have some for my dog (they weigh almost the same). Rather than driving 1 1/2 miles down the road and buying cat frontline, I'm being very lazy and want to just give dog frontline to my cat. So, is dog frontline safe for cats? Anyone know??

Yes but you have to put the correct dosage. We buy extra large dog frontline and dose it down for the kitties. Cats get .5mL/cc so if you have a way to measure that out, that is all the cat gets.

I would really, really, really not give dog-specific medication to a cat.

I know it's not the case for ALL medication, but there are some dog-specific flea medications that cause HORRIBLE toxic side effects for cats. I've seen this at least a handful of times. It's very sad and there's little you can do for the cat until the effects wear off. It's very, very uncomfortable for them (the ones I've seen have developed very severe shuddering and twitching) and can take more than 24 hours to wear off.

I would just hold off on giving the medication altogether until you're able to get cat-specific stuff.

Just my two cents.

I know that too, that's why I was asking about Frontline specifically.

I understand everyones concern, and if you are worried I would not take the chance. According to my vet though, it is the same (advantage as well) my vet issues me large quantities and advises me how to dose it out for the cats and the dogs. I have never used frontline myself but asked because a friend had some, I have used advantage this way with no problems though. Had a scare once when another issue popped up at the same time.

ETA: A quick search pretty well advises against it, something about a tick med in the dog formula, not sure if that was the case back when I inquired or even if it is true as I was hitting mostly on other forums, but I would not risk it without contacting your vets office directly in case my advice was bad. I cannot personally attest to my it for frontline, only advantage.

No, no, NO!!!!!! PLEASE do not. People giving cats their dog's medication is the #1 cause of cat deaths related to topical flea preventatives.. or at least I read that somewhere. But it says not to use it on any animals other than dogs on the frontline label, and that should be enough. Just skip the kitty flea preventative for a few days until you can get it.

If you call the Frontline company and verify that the ingredients are the same in each ( I don't know if they disclose ALL ingredients on the label - if they do, and they're the same, you might be safe with a small amount) then it might be okay. But honestly, I wouldn't, unless you know what you're doing and know the ingredients and exactly how safe it is.

NO NO if the dog and cat weigh the same that makes no difference. The CORRECT dosage for a cat is .5cc/mL if you are buying dog Frontline or Frontline Plus. DO NOT GIVE THE SAME AMOUNT FOR A DOG AND A CAT NO MATTER WHAT SIZE. The Advantage dosage is a little different and I can give you that if you like too. It is what our vet clinic at work uses and what I personally use.
