I found a lost dog this morning. He has a collar but no tag. I took him to a local vet to check for microchip, but he doesnt have one. The humane soceity isnt open on the weekends.

The dog is super sweet. he loves people and has been playing with the neighbors kids. he has been fine with my dog. I tried to keep him in my fenced back yard but he is smaller enough to squeeze through the rails. When i tried to leave for work he ran after my car. I didnt want him to run on the main road so i put him in a crate in my garage.

What can i do with him. A groomer at the vet i took him too said if he wasnt claimed he would be interested in the dog. How long do i have to wait to give him to someone? Do I have to take him to humane soceity? I just dont want him to be put down, he is such a sweet dog and I am pretty sure I can find someone to take him.

What can i do?

Here he is:

Call your local AC tomorrow and ask them what the statute is on how long you can hold a stray before you rehome it. I would also put up "Found Dog" fliers in your area. You are not required to take the dog to AC, so far as I know.

I would recommend keeping the dog apart from your dogs, for health reasons. You don't know if this dog carrying diseases/parasites.

Depends on location how long the dog must be held for. You are not required to take him in, but you need to tell AC/humane society that you have him, then you cannot get in trouble for not keeping him long enough, since it was reported you have him.

He sure is cute!

Call your local AC, rescues, vets and let them know you've found a dog. Give them his description and where you found him. I'd also put up brief "FOUND DOG" signs around the neighbourhood and pet stores & grocery stores, and maybe drive around town for a bit asking people if they've lost a dog or recognize the dog (we did this when we found a BC on our road, if they weren't home we just left a note on the door saying "If you are missing a dog, he is safe. Please call ________").
