He looks great and is gorgeous. :)

I know someone that ended up with an animal cruelty officer at her house after walking her dogs. The officer talked to her and said her dogs looked healthy after seeing them. Someone must have reported her as abusing her dogs by starving them. People really need to know what the proper weight of dogs are and what a malnourished/starved dog looks like.

    I love my vet.

I pay no attention to anything he tells me about feeding.

He wishes all of his patients were in the condition mine are in.

He pays no attention to anything I say about feeding ;)

He looks like a normal young Belgian to me. Actually he has more weight than many young Belgians.

I don't get many such comments about the Black Dogs because they are so hairy, it's hard to tell what their weight is. But one of my friends has a young male Black Dog and several people at the training club almost convinced her there had to be something very wrong with him because he was so skinny. They'd touch him and get all alarmed "OMG! He's so skinny! What do you feed him? How much do you feed him? Have you taken him to the vet?". He's her first Belgian too, which sort of makes it worse.

It's funny though, how different people have different perceptions about that stuff. Another friend has a young, skinny little Mal girl and at a big show a few months ago an old dog guy commented "now THAT is working size and weight!" while we were ring side. I'd say at an AKC show, you could get all sorts of comments from all sorts of people about if your dog is too skinny, fine, just right, too fat, needs more exercise, needs less exercise and more food, etc. Different breeds all have their norms and someone with show Labs would very likely find most Belgians to be too skinny. Other Belgian people, probably not so much although some will obsess over trying to get and keep weight on their dogs (probably because someone else made them feel weird about their dog's weight at some point). Just be glad you don't have a one of the super skinny sighthounds breeds or you'd probably hear that sort of thing every time you had your dog out anywhere :)

ETA: Just showed the picture to my husband and said someone commented that this dog was too skinny and needed to be fed more. His reply "Oh brother - that's a good looking dog there!".

    He looks FANTASTIC!

Luckily, I haven't gotten it much. A few people have made comments but most tell me how in-shape he is. My dad is typically the one who's like "you need to feed that dog more" because he's constantly hungry and begging for food... Ummm... He likes food, he'd eat all day and be 50lbs if I let him, LOL - doesn't mean he SHOULD.

    Backup looks awesome!
I've gotten a handful of comments about my dogs out in public being too skinny, yet we goto agility and I have people come up and tell me my dogs look awesome. You just need to surround yourself with the right crowd. :)

People are rude. I was actually told yesterday that I abuse Tsuki because she's so skeleton looking. She is oddly put together, think dachshund wearing a poodle suit mixed with a ferret, mad scientiest, and squirrel, so I can see where they get it, but people need to learn to STFU and keep it to themselves.

I used to get it a LOT with Skye, she was ribby and hard to keep weight on when she was young. To the point the 'trainer' at Petsmart took the bowl of cookies off the register and set it down for her to eat..sigh. I get comments every now and then now. Backup looks great :). I get almost distraught watching some of the dog shows on tv and seeing the tubbies...it's getting bad.

Working in a pet store, I make a point to compliment people with dogs that are in great shape! And I do usually sneak in a (polite) 'hefty' or 'You like your snacks!' with dogs on the tubby side.

If the person is an idiot and I'm in a mood, I'll respond that dogs are like people, it isn't healthy for either to be fat and ask when the last time they saw a fat athlete was? (While giving the person judgy eyes, lolz, since most of these owners are also horribly overweight.)

But if the person is simply genuinely ignorant and nice I'll explain it in a kinder way. :)

Backup looks exactly how he should look, because it takes a fit dog to be the perfect Psychotic Lemur.

Sawyer is at a pretty decent weight, could use some more definition, but it's impossible to tell under his coat anyway. He looks a lot heavier than he is because of his floof.

I think he looks great. .

People seem to think a fat dog is a healthy dog.

Having a fit beagle. I get comments ALL the time. Thats not a real beagle, he is to skinny. which I just say, no he is in shape, not fat like 98% of beagles you see daily.
[IMG] 9this picture is older, and he is more defined now. But you get the idea)
At the dog park a few weeks ago. I heard a man yelling.
"whos beagle is that?" pointing at Solo. I said he was mine. He too had his beagle there. He was so delighted to see another beagle, in good shape. his to was a awesome looking dog, great shape. we talked for a long while, well our 2 played (whats with the same breed always ending up playing with each other lol. As soon as solo sees another beagle he just wants to play with them lol)

Blaze is to fluffy to see how skinny and built he really is. But after he gets out of the water from swimming, all his fluff sinks in and you can tell how well built he is under all the fluff. So I hardly ever get comments on his weight.

    This.^

I was at Petco a couple years ago with Saga and THREE separate people had remarked that she was too skinny, finally, after the third one, I called over to my vet (who does the shot clinic there) "Is my dog too skinny?" Doc:"No, she is the perfect weight for her breed/age and activity level. Most people are just too used to their own FAT dogs to know what a dog in the RIGHT condition looks like." The third person who said that to me was in line to see Doc, with her TUBBY Boxer. She gave us BOTH a dirty look and then got lectured by Doc about HER dog's weight problem.

I think he looks great. Besides most people's skewed idea of what a dog's weight should be, I think his lovely long legs create a bit of a thinning optical illusion, if that makes sense.

Maisy has always run towards being very lean but I don't think anyone has ever said a word to me about her, maybe because she has big muscular thighs and she's short, so she has an optical illusion in the opposite direction. Pip is too hairy for people to really see, and he kind of looks round even when he's in really good shape anyway. Squash always seems just a few pounds overweight to me, although others whose opinions I trust tell me he looks good. He's got a surprising amount of "extra" loose skin and I think it does heavy him up a little bit visually.

Yeah people are just crazy lol. Backup looks great.

Somehow, everyone I've ran into has been able to appreciate that Juno is muscular and in shape. And there is no strange belief that Lucy being fat is "healthy." Makes things easier for us all.

    He looks GREAT to me.

Just try to ignore them. I was once told at a 4-H event, by a 10 year old, no less, that Psyche was "way to skinny, you should feed her more"... Yep. *shakes head* Psyche is a fit dog. She gets 2 cups of good food a day and LOTS of exercise...

Upendi had a very similar build to Backup for a long time, she didn't start to fill out until she was around 3 and I used to get comments like that all the time. I think he looks lovely.

I think Backup looks great!! The only time I've really had people comment on a dog's weight was right after we got Tipper and she looked like this.

Which was skinnier than I was comfortable with honestly. And right now she's a tiny bit heavier than what I'd like - she's so long that when she gains weight it ends up looking really strange. And when she loses weight she looks emaciated. It's a fine line.

I've never had a comment on Mu (except my mom when she commented on how heavy she was a couple months ago and she was right lol). The only comments I get on Murphy are about how silly he looks and "When is he going to grow into his legs?" Although the vet is always mightily impressed that a half basset isn't 50 pounds overweight. :)

Yah, me too. I did get a few comments when I had Kiba that he was "too thin" (you could see his ribs when he moved a certain way), but it was mostly "OMG, that dog is HUGE! Look at his muscles!!!!" And while I wouldn't have minded putting a bit more fat on him, I knew he was just fine the way he was. His new owners send me picture updates every few months and now that he's been neutered he's a bit on the chubby side now, but still not "fat". They're taking good care of him.

When Chloe gained some weight (skinny/lean she is 45 pounds, 48 pounds is normal, and she was pushing around 55lbs) I was the only one that really cared about it. Everybody else said they thought she looked fine, but then when I stood her next to Rose (who was at a great weight at the time, now she's a bit too thin due to her age :() my mom was like, "Oh. Yup, Chloe, you are a fatty." LOL She's down to about 50 pounds now, so we're doing pretty good.

I did have a neighbor make some comment once when I was out walking Blackie and Rose that we were out to "burn some calories and have them loose some weight" (they were what I would call normal at the time, not fat or lean), when he had a tub of a lard puggle sitting up on his front doorstep.

Your dog is in gorgeous condition, and anyone with half a brain knows it!

    You have NO. IDEA. :rofl1:

I've had people threaten to call animal control and/or the cops on me right on the spot.

I've had people try to force my dog to eat all manner of things (and, being a Saluki, he gives them a "Ew. I am NOT touching your disgusting peasant food. Now step away, you filthy commoner!" look).

I've been cussed at/screamed at for starving my dog.

I normally explain that when a dog is truly starved, the body eats away their muscle when there is no more fat... So if my dog were truly starved, he would NOT look like THIS -

But, of course, *I* know nothing because *I* can't even feed my dog properly ;)

(I also get that my APBTs are skinny. It just never ends!)
